Please tell me I haven't lost my mind....
I've become enthralled with metal detecting videos on YouTube. When the "hunters" find old coins in the ground, I can't help but wonder about the circumstances of the loss when it occurred and the consequences to the person who lost the coin.

1. I looked into buying a detector! (I'd rather find jewelry, :-) ).

2. I'm an archaeologist.
I'm usually more concerned with the data that is lost when looters take materials that they never record/report and in a manner that destroys context.

3. Your presumption of context is lack of understanding.

4. You haven't lost your mind
It is interesting the way you put it. When I was growing up, my friend's father, used to go on treasure hunts with a group, it was just exciting for them, don't remember if they found much.

5. OK, I will tell you you haven't lost your mind.
I can be made to do just about anything.

Although I have never seen a metal detecting video on YouTube, I am sure it can be fun to watch. But please, get a life and don't spend too much time watching this. Get a metal detector and do it yourself!

6. Could be interesting. You should watch tv for this new show,
about meteorite hunters. They travel the world with detectors looking for meteorites, which are metallic and thus can be verified with a magnet.
They are looking in known areas, but around craters.
They were in Australia, south America, Sweden or Norway.
That was interesting as their finds are from ... another world ... outer space.
Plus I know a guy who seems just like the american character on the show.
Cut from the same cloth, or same mold, even talks the same.
So I can identify.
