Twilight or Pokemon: Which should be more embarassing for people well into their 20s?
This is inspired by an argument at work between a 24-year old girl who likes Twilight and 27-year old guy who likes Pokemon.

Personally I'd have to say that Pokemon are now mostly liked by older people who played it growing up while Twilight's fanbase consists mostly of 14-year old girls still so...

1. I was pretty stunned by the middle aged crowd who LOVED Twilight...
I love vampire stories but I could not get past the writing. I assume I was not the target audience anyway (read it for book club). But many over 20 people devoured the series and thought it was The Greatest Thing Ever!

To each his own.

2. The world
is full of guilty pleasures. And if you don't have any yet, give it time. And you will too.

I have only the most vague of ideas what either of these are, but I am well outside of that particular age demographic.

So my answer is this - neither. Or both. Take your pick.

3. I named a kitten of mine Twilight 6 years ago before the movie came out. Someone asked me
if I named the cat after the movie and I was so embarrassed. I hate the supernatural. I considered changing her name but my niece named my kitten so I'll stick with Twilight.

I didn't name my kitty Riff Raff after Rocky Horror, but at least that was a good movie :D

4. You should never be embarassed about what you enjoy.
My 18yr old son, the 5'11", 200lb football and rugby player, wrestler, and Tae Kwon Do black belt, loves watching anime like Dragon Ball Z and Naruto. I never discourage anything that might be too "young" for him. We all have to grow up too fast as it is.

5. Both.
I actually had to post a disclaimer about this on my OKCupid profile, I have an exceedingly-low geek-tolerance. (Ranking right next to my undying loathing of hippies and jam-band fans.) It was just too hard when you meet someone and they're awesome and there is physical chemistry...then they disclose an unnatural love for something geeky and lame and all of a sudden you just want to point and laugh.

Just...point & laugh. Point. Laugh.

9. If I did, I did it solely with Google.
I've never actually seen SW, Ep. 1-6.

I only recently finally saw LoTR and that was solely to impress a woman. (She's worth it, she's adorable, a friend of many years I've had a thing for as long as I've known her and we share ~90% of our interests. Irritatingly, she's also 1000 mi. away and I don't do LDRs. Sowing seeds for if I ever manage to get out of DC though.)

14. I miss watching Thomas the Tank Engine with my kids.
It would probably be a little odd to watch it alone now that they're grown up and away in college.

13. I'm 31 and I love Pokemon and kinda like Twilight--but only the movies.
The books are just awful. She should have skipped writing the novels and just given the story outline to a screenwriter.

16. I don't think it's all that unusual

Although I suppose one could argue the current generation may develop these cultural? habits earlier and keep them longer than they used to. I'm still a punk at heart, even though my college years are long behind me. I think for some of us, exposure to types of culture, etc. in college was more powerful than exposure to things like Pokemon, which I would tend to associate more with school-age kids.

Thankfully, my son never cared for Pokemon or any of those card games, but he is rather obsessed with Star Wars. (Plus there seem to be many of we middle-aged folks who really like the Harry Potter series and films..)

17. This 43 year old guy kinda likes both of them.
I don't play any of the Pokemon games, but they look like fun. And I liked the first two Twilight movies.

Edited on Wed Feb-16-11 10:47 AM by NuclearDem
I do, however, break out my Nintendo DS occasionally and play some SoulSilver. It's a remake of one of the Pokemon games I played as a kid, so it's just a nostalgic thing.
