I got mail today from the Northwoods Shelter in Iron River Michigan. We're going up there tomorrow to spend the weekend volunteering. It's not going to be too much of a good time for one of the people there, though. This is from the letter that I received:
I thought about calling you when I got home last night, but Jodi had called me (and had tried to call several times while I was gone - so I knew something was wrong) and she was filled with terrible news!! Jodi has 2 dogs, an Irish Wolfhound and a little cocker spaniel mix, Millie.
Well, Millie was hit by a car and killed last night!! The kids were out playing with her, and when they went to come in the house Millie didn't come, so they ran in to get a jacket, and in the mean time something stole their attention, and Millie had a little more time outside and had slipped around the front of the house and wandered up to the road. She was a sweet little girl with a great little personality. The whole family is devastated and her daughter is physically sick with grief.
THEN, yesterday we got a litter of puppies in at the shelter. Boxer/shepherd/lab mixes who are adorable. Well, they were all ok yesterday. They all received a vaccination, a bath (they all smelled like poop) and were blowed dry so they wouldn't be damp and cold. Well, Jodi ended up taking the runt of the litter home with her because he is so much smaller than the others that he's just not getting enough to eat etc.... (there were 11 puppies in the litter) Well, we have people who come at night (occasionally) and walk the dogs. One of our families came to walk our dogs and noticed that one of the new puppies was not doing well. He was foaming at the mouth and howling. So she brought the puppy to Jodi and she called Dr. Lindstrom and she thought it sounded like stress. It also could be a reaction to the vaccination. She said to give Benedryl and some kaeopectate and keep them warm. Well, Jodi did that and he settled a little and then he started to have seizures!! He would have one every 5 minutes. So Jodi had to take him up to the shelter and euthanize this poor little soul. So Jodi lost her own dog and also had to put a puppy to sleep. I felt so bad I wasn't able to help her with that. She sounded in shock last night when I talked to her and even this morning, but I'm sure it will hit her head on when she goes to bury her little Millie today.
I've only met Jodi briefly but I feel so bad for her. If you wouldn't mind sending some good thoughts her way I would appreciate it a lot. Thanks.
