1. what are you playing...
as in game mode... deathmatch, basic without perks, objective based or hardcore... I personally love strategic objective based modes such as search and destroy (but if you die you can't respawn), headquarters, etc.

A lot of it also depends how often you play the game and, more importantly, how well you know the maps.

I'm trying to knit a tablecloth right now, so I haven't played in a couple of months. Before that, not a day would go by when I wouldn't play after work or ALL weekend :)

No matter how good you get though, you're going to die. The trick is to get your kill/death ratio up.

2. i prefer team DM, headquarters and ground war...
I only rarely get to even the mid-level killstreaks, so I have been playing barebones more and more(I think the killstreaks are kinda gimmicky, imo)...

I know most of the maps inside and out; I just can't seem to get kills with any consistency, and even though I've been playing since December, most of my rounds still end with a k/d ratio of less than 1

3. Keep playing, get to know the maps
A lot of times, the quality of your fellow players will also be helpful or unhelpful to your k/d ratio. I love barebones anyway, because you get to concentrate on skill rather than just employing quick ways to ramp up your kills.

Have you experimented with different weapon setups? I like some guns more than others and using one versus the other will greatly impact my k/d ratio. Give it time.

6. yeah, i've played around with pretty much all of the guns/perks
(currently at level 44), and I've looked on other boards to see what the elite players prefer...

I do agree that playing with reasonably well-coordinated team that is on mic has a distinct advantage over six random players who aren't...I'm usually grouped with the latter type...

4. Is this your first shooter game?
They pretty much all control the same, so if you haven't been gaming for a long time, other people will simply have much better aim. Also, how nice is your TV? You don't need a great one, but if you aren't playing it in HD most other gamers will have a distinct advantage long range.

Finally, get yourself some nice headphones and use ninja. If you can hear them coming, you can aim before they even know you're there.

5. that's part of the reason why i'm so frustrated...
I've been doing this awhile -- Among others, I excelled in the Doom series, Duke Nukem, Goldeneye N64, and the Half-Life/Counter-Strike/valve games...I knew there would be a learning curve, and wasn't expecting to be good from day one, but my progress has topped out at the 'barely mediocre' level...

fwiw I am playing in HD, but don't have headphones or mic...

7. What's your perk/weapon combination?
I find the AK47 with Steady Aim Pro or Sleight of Hand Pro works well. I also have Hardline Pro and Marathon.

8. I mix them up a lot
but my usual rotation is most often:
FAMAS
AUG
Galil
AK74u
Commando (just unlocked)

Perks are usually:
Lightweight Pro/Ghost/Flak jacket
Sleight of Hand/Hardened/Steady Aim
Ninja/Marathon

I also have Warlord pro, which I use when not playing barebones...
