I spilled salad dressing on the wood floor
There are big spots all over the floor. Do I have to get the whole thing refinished?

We just had it refinished at great expense a few years ago. I hate my life.

1. What is it finished with?
I can't imagine in any case you would have to refinish it. Ours is polyurethane, but the dressing wouldn't spot that.

5. Soap, soap dissolves oil
Wash with soap and water. If that isn't good enough, maybe try a solvent, but try with dish soap first. Maybe call whoever finished your floors? I really hate when I spill stuff, I am sorry you are having this trouble.

7. cigarette ashes
I'm not kidding. Works wonders in drawing out the oil. Need a good pile of them though. When I got interested in wood refinishing I read tons of books on the subject and they all said this. Worked great on that mayo stain on my teak coffee table. I've actually got a pile of ashes working on the teak end table from where I set down a bottle of baby oil. Someone needs to invent a bottle for baby oil that doesn't leak the oil all over the outside of the bottle. I can't even find one with a squirt top!

9. No need to get it refinished.
Just spill salad dressing all over the rest of the floor.

11. Perhaps posting this question in the DIY & Home Improvement Group
will bring other suggestions. On the advice of someone in that group who is an expert, I have used Minwax Floor Reviver with great success.(I used the low-gloss)
It is easy to apply and dries in about two hours. I have done full size rooms and used it for a spot patch. I do think it will be necessary to draw our the oils. Maybe the answer is on their site. They also have a feature where you can ask them questions through the site. What kinds of spots, black marks, white marks?

The Minwax web site is full of helpful information.
