A question about mozilla firefox...
I'm a low tech new user of mozilla (my tech person changed me over from Internet Explorer because he said that IE makes me too vulnerable to viruses).

But I have an issue: when I click on a link I can't just click back to DU (or anywhere else I happen to be on the net)the way I used to. I have to exit wherever I am and use mozilla to get back on the Internet and start all over. Obviously, not a good thing.

Anyone know how I can change this?

1. What happens when you click the back button?
Alternately, is tabbed browsing on? It might be opening a new tab for every link clicked. Just close the tab and the old page should be underneath.

(I'm guessing it's not either of these. You strike me as neither this low-tech or unintuitive. You'd have figured it out by now.)

5. Look at the top of your window...
do you see a bunch of folder tabs?

6. You have a connection to three different sections. Which one do I want or is it all three?
How do I get to mozilla's Start Page?

7. Ignore everything but the tabs.
I'm asking if you see the folder tabs like in the photo. If so, you can click on them to change between browser windows.

8. No, I don't see them. I click on the mozilla icon on my desk top and it defaults to
my aol account home page.

9. Okay.
What happens when you click a link? Does a new window open or does the page change to the new page?

Lemme see if I can find a troubleshoot guide for a new user. I have to say it was irresponsible for him to install it and then not show you how to use it to a basic level of comfort.

Okay, this is a walkthrough to links and navigation from Mozilla, the publisher of Firefox. It's written from the standpoint of assuming you know absolutely nothing. Since you used IE for years, most of this is going to seem familiar.

11. I don't get to the Mozilla home page. Clearly, my internet person made the default
to my aol page (I remember he asked me but I didn't realize the consequences! Duh...).

It's no problem, really, now that I realize what is going on. I'll just give him a call in the morning and he can tell me how to change this. I have a couple of other questions for him so I think it will be ok.

I want to thank you for your patience with me on this. I have real anxiety over these issues and everyone on DU has been so helpful and nice.

Thank you for not just throwing up your hands. I know I can be hopeless to some people...

18. I did it! I found what you were referring to! OK, it just takes a little bit of getting used to
clicking on those tabs above the message. When I first saw your chart it didn't resemble what I had so I thought it didn't exist for me...but dawn broke over marble head, as the saying goes! DUH!

Eventually, even I learn this stuff...

Thanks for your help. I wanted you to know that your directions were fine, it was my not seeing the forest for the trees.

19. I think you will like it once you get the hang of it...
I did all the things you are doing, lol! It takes a little time to figure out the tab thingies and I am sure there's plenty I still don't know. I was able to set up permanent little tabs across the top (kinda like bookmarks) with my favorites places so all I have to do is click on them and they open up.

I can tell you that I haven't had any crashing and those stupid messages about sending a report to Microsoft since I started using firefox. It blocks ads and redirects, too.

I believe we were called "Amish" and that's fine by me. :)

Good luck!

2. That's strange. One thing you might try is to go to Tools, and select
Options. At the Options Menu, under the Tabs Tab, you can st up how tabs will open. I use "open tabs in a new window". THis makes it so that when I click on a link, it is opened in a new tab (most of the time). When I am done with the tab, I just close it and go back to my original tab.

Having said that, I don't know why you can browse back, you should be able to, hopefully someone can help you fix that.

10. Okay.

That usually means it has either opened a new window or a new tab: the back button is grayed out, there is nothing to back up to; you're on the first page displayed in that window/tab.

Edit: I have to run out and grab some dinner. I'll be back in a few if you're still having problems or someone else has not picked up the troubleshooting when I return.

12. Well, I may contact you again later. I'm going to contact my tech guy tomorrow morning
when he opens shop at 9 am. I'm sure it's just a click away from being solved...

I want to thank you for your help and I'll pm you if I'm in real trouble. I am one of those old people who younger people deem "hopeless" or "clueless" but we're really good on SOME subjects...

14. Oh, Ellen, how nice to see you here !
You have the perfect situation! I do not, peccato!

I wish things were different. It's difficult for us to navigate on our own, since we are both children of the non tech age group!

This is a quelque sujet I wish I did not have...

15. Then that means you probably opened a new tab
You can do everything with the mouse but I like to use the keyboard shortcuts:

Ctrl + t opens a new tab
Ctrl + w closes the current tab
Ctrl + PgUp scrolls forward through the tabs
Ctrl + PgDn scrolls backwards through the tabs

There are many more but those should get you started.

16. So I should use Ctrl+ w to close the current tab when I want to close a tab I have opened on a DU
link? Or do I go backward to DU (or anywhere else)?

I'm confused about what I should do...

17. sky's the limit
you can do whatever you want as there is no "right" way.

Here's how I read the lounge (or any message board) for example. I see a thread I want to read, I right-click on it and press 'T.' That opens the thread in a new tab but I don't switch to that tab just yet. I'm still back on the list of topics page. Continuing to work down the list, I see another thread I want to read and I do the same thing. When I've opened all the threads that look interesting in new tabs, I use Ctrl + PgDn to switch tabs. When I've finished reading a thread and wish to close it, I type Ctrl + w (or click the 'x' on the tab). Eventually, I've navigated through all the open tabs reading and closing them one by one. Then I go to a different forum and repeat the process. Oftentimes I will have dozens of tabs open.
