Best song that's against taking drugs?
For me, the best song I know of that's anti-doing drugs is the Beatles' "A Day In The Life."

Think about it.

4. In the lyrics.
A guy who has such a boring, humdrum life, he only notices the most trivial things, and can only "escape" by getting high.

And that last long note, sounds like death.

9. Amphetamine Annie by Canned Heat
This is a song with a message
I want you to heed my warning
I wanna tell you all a story
About this chick I know
They call her "Amphetamine Annie"
She's always shovelling snow
I sat her down and told her
I told her crystal clear
"I don't mind you getting high
But there's one thing you should fear"
"Your mind might think its flying, baby
On those little pills
But you ought to know it's dying, 'cause
Speed kills"
But Annie kept on speeding
Her health was getting poor
She saw things in the window
She heard things at the door
Her mind was like a grinding mill
Her lips were cracked and sore
Her skin was turning yellow
I just couldn't take it no more
She thought her mind was flying
On those little pills
She didn't it was going down fast, 'cause
Speed kills
Well I sat her down and told her
I told her one more time
"The whole wide human race has taken
Far too much methedrine"
She said "I don't care what a Limey says,
I've got to get it on
I'm not here to just see no man
Who come from across the pond
She wouldn't heed my warning
Lord, she wouldn't hear what I said
Now she's in the graveyard, and she's
Awfully dead

11. "Because I Got High" by AfroMan
I was gonna clean my room until I got high
I gonna get up and find the broom but then I got high
My room is still messed up and I know why
Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high

I was gonna go to class before I got high
I coulda cheated and I coulda passed but I got high
I am taking it next semester and I know why
Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high

I was gonna go to work but then I got high
I just got a new promotion but I got high
Now I'm selling dope and I know why
Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high

I was gonna go to court before I got high
I was gonna pay my child support but then I got high
They took my whole paycheck and I know why
Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high

I wasnt gonna run from the cops but I was high
I was gonna pull right over and stop but I was high
Now I am a paraplegic, and I know why
Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high

I was gonna pay my car note until I got high
I was gonna gamble on the boat but then I got high
Now the tow truck is pulling away and I know why
Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high

I was gonna make love to you but then I got high
I was gonna eat yo pussy too but then I got high
Now I'm jacking off and I know why
Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high

I messed up my entire life because I got high
I lost my kids and wife because I got high
Now I'm sleeping on the sidewalk and I know why
Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high

I'm gonna stop singing this song because I'm high
I'm singing this whole thing wrong because I'm high
And if I dont sell one copy I know why
Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high

it's Failure's "Dirty Blue Balloons"...reminds me all too clearly of a life I don't EVER want any part of again.

I GOT HIGH, ON SCRAPINGS FROM MY NAILS
NOW I'M BACK DOWN, MY EYES ARE GROWING DARK
MY BURNT SPOON, HAS DRIED BENEATH THE BED
AND I'M DREAMING OF... DIRTY BLUE BALLOONS

I'VE WAITED SO LONG WITHOUT YOU
I'VE WAITED TOO LONG FOR YOU

HE CAME IN, HE DIDN'T SPEAK MY LANGUAGE
I PAID HIM WITH EVERYTHING I HAD
AND PROMISED NEXT TIME; HE OPENED UP HIS MOUTH
AND THEN THEY FLOATED OUT... DIRTY BLUE BALLOONS

NOTHING HELPS, AND NO ONE ELSE
CAN MAKE IT FEEL OKAY... FLOAT ME THROUGH THE DAY
NOTHING HELPS, AND NO ONE ELSE
CAN MAKE IT FEEL ALRIGHT... FLOAT ME THROUGH THE NIGHT
I CAN NOT LET 'EM GO
DIRTY BLUE BALLOONS

Some moments of poetry and genius, laden with pompous, self-absorbed, self-aggrandizing, EVERYONE LOOK MY NAVEL BECAUSE IT IS SO FASCINATING crappola.

I find the whole band's story fascinating, but I just want to tell my young friends, "This is what happens when use too much drugs and have a lot of money and surround yourself with people who only say 'yes'".

Now I'm going to run for cover.;-)

21. C'mon. Nobody has mentioned the Stones' "Sister Morphine?"
It never gets any radio play, perhaps because it is so profoundly depressing. Very spare instrumentation, mostly Mick Taylor's slide guitar.
Mick absolutely sounds like he's dying.
If you haven't heard it, seek it.
It's on "Sticky Fingers."

Rolling Stones - Sister Morphine Lyrics

Here I lie in my hospital bed
Tell me, Sister Morphine, when are you coming round again?
Oh, I don't think I can wait that long
Oh you see that I'm not that strong

The scream of the ambulance is sounding in my ears
Tell me, Sister Morphine, how long have
I been lying here? What am I doing in this place?
Why does the doctor have no face?

Oh, I can't crawl across the floor Ah,
Can't you see, Sister Morphine, I'm trying to score.

Well it just goes to show things are not what they seem
Please, Sister Morphine, turn my nightmares into dreams.
Oh can't you see I'm fading fast? And that this shot will be my last.

Sweet cousin cocaine, lay your cool cool hands on my head
Ah come on, Sister Morphine, you better make up my bed
'Cause you know and I know in the morning I'll be dead
You can sit around and you can watch all the clean white sheets
stained red.

From the "You Are What You Is" album. He also did one called "Cocaine Decisions", but it pretty much sucks. Keep in mind that I worship at the altar of Frank Zappa, so for me to say it sucks means it's *really* bad.

23. Not very obvious, but what else could it mean?
Dress Rehearsal Rag - Leonard Cohen

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Four o'clock in the afternoon
and I didn't feel like very much
I said to myself, "Where are you golden boy,
where is your famous golden touch?"
I thought you knew where
all of the elephants lie down,
I thought you were the crown prince
of all the wheels in Ivory Town
Just take a look at your body now,
there's nothing much to save
and a bitter voice in the mirror cries,
"Hey, Prince, you need a shave."
Now if you can manage to get
your trembling fingers to behave,
why don't you try unwrapping
a stainless steel razor blade?
That's right, it's come to this,
yes it's come to this,
and wasn't it a long way down,
wasn't it a strange way down?

There's no hot water
and the cold is running thin
Well, what do you expect from
the kind of places you've been living in?
Don't drink from that cup,
it's all caked and cracked along the rim.
That's not the electric light, my friend,
that is your vision growing dim
Cover up your face with soap, there,
now you're Santa Claus
And you've got a gift for anyone
who will give you his applause
I thought you were a racing man,
ah, but you couldn't take the pace
That's a funeral in the mirror
and it's stopping at your face
That's right, it's come to this,
yes it's come to this,
and wasn't it a long way down,
ah wasn't it a strange way down?

Once there was a path
and a girl with chestnut hair,
and you passed the summers
picking all of the berries that grew there;
there were times she was a woman,
oh, there were times she was just a child,
and you held her in the shadows
where the raspberries grow wild
And you climbed the twilight mountains
and you sang about the view,
and everywhere that you wandered
love seemed to go along with you
That's a hard one to remember,
yes it makes you clench your fist
And then the veins stand out like highways,
all along your wrist
And yes it's come to this,
it's come to this,
and wasn't it a long way down,
wasn't it a strange way down?

You can still find a job,
go out and talk to a friend
On the back of every magazine
there are those coupons you can send
Why don't you join the Rosicrucians,
they can give you back your hope,
you can find your love with diagrams
on a plain brown envelope
But you've used up all your coupons
except the one that seems
to be written on your wrist
along with several thousand dreams
Now Santa Claus comes forward,
that's a razor in his mit;
and he puts on his dark glasses
and he shows you where to hit;
and then the cameras pan,
the stand in stunt man,
dress rehearsal rag,
it's just the dress rehearsal rag,
you know this dress rehearsal rag,
it's just a dress rehearsal rag

25. "White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
Edited on Thu Apr-01-04 11:51 PM by Sandpiper
Fine baby, Fine
Rich baby, interesting
Freeze! Rock (Rock Rock Rock Rock Rock Rock Rock)
Aaah, aaah, aaah, aaah)
Uhraah!
Bass!

Ooh White, White
Ooh White, White
Ooh White, White

(Ooh White Lines) Vision dreams of passion
(Blowin? through my mind) and all the while I think of you
(High fry) a very strange reaction
(For us to unwind) the more I see, the more I do
(Something like a phenomenon) Baby!
(Tellin your body to come along, but white lines blow away)
(Blow! Rock it! Blow!)

Ticket to ride, white line highway
Tell all your friends, they can go my way
Pay your toll, sell your soul
Pound for pound costs more than gold
The longer you stay, the more you pay
My white lines go a long way
Either up your nose or through your vein
With nothin to gain except killin? your brain

(Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock!)
(Blow!)

(Ahhh) Higher, baby
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
And don't ever come down! (Freebase!)

Rang dang diggedy dang di-dang
Rang dang diggedy dang di-dang
Rang dang diggedy dang di-dang
Diggedy dang di-dang diggedy dang di-dang

(Pipeline) pure as the driven snow
(Connected to my mind) and now I'm havin? fun, baby!
(High fry) it's getting kinda low
(Cause it makes you feel so nice) I need some one-on-one, baby!
(Don't let it blow your mind away) Baby!
(And go into your little hideaway ?cause white lines blow away)
(Blow! Rock it! Blow!)

A million magic crystals, painted pure and white
A multi-million dollars almost overnight
Twice as sweet as sugar, twice as bitter as salt
And if you get hooked, baby, it's nobody else's fault, so don't do it!

(Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock!)
Raah! (Blow!)

(Ahhh) Higher, baby
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
And don't ever come down! (Freebase!)

(Don?t you get too high) don?t you get too high baby!
(Turns you on) you really turn me on and on
(When you gonna come down) my temperature is risin?
(When the thrill is gone) no, I don?t want you to go

A street kid gets arrested, gonna do some time
He got out three years from now just to commit more crime
A businessman is caught with 24 kilos
He?s out on bail and out of jail
And that?s the way it goes
Raah!

(Kane! Sugar! Kane! Sugar! Kane!)

Athletes rejected, governors corrected
Gangsters, thugs and smugglers are thoroughly respected
The money gets divided
The women get excited
Now I?m broke and it?s no joke
It?s hard as hell to fight it, don?t buy it!

(Freeze! Haha ha ha! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock!)
Raah! (Blow!)

(Ahhh) Get higher, baby
(Ahhh) Get higher, girl!
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
C?mon!
Raah!

(White Lines) Vision dreams of passion
(Blowin? through my mind) and all the while I think of you
(High Fry) a very strange reaction
(For us to unwind) the more I see, the more I do
(Something like a phenomenon) Baby!
(Tellin your body to come along, but white lines blow away)

Little Jack Horner sitting on the corner
With no shoes and clothes
This aint funny, but he took his money
And sniffed it up his nose

27. Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb
This song is from the perspective of the dieing addict.

Hello? Is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anyone home? Come on, now. I hear you're feeling down. Well I can ease your pain, Get you on your feet again. Relax. I need some information first. Just the basic facts, Can you show me where it hurts? There is no pain, you are receding. A distant ship's smoke on the horizon. You are only coming through in waves. Your lips move but I can't hear what you're sayin'. When I was a child I had a fever. My hands felt just like two balloons. Now I got that feeling once again. I can't explain, you would not understand. This is not how I am. I have become comfortably numb. Ok. Just a little pinprick. There'll be no more ...Aaaaaahhhhh! But you may feel a little sick. Can you stand up? I do believe it's working. Good. That'll keep you going for the show. Come on it's time to go. There is no pain, you are receding. A distant ship's smoke on the horizon. You are only coming through in waves. Your lips move but I can't hear what you're sayin'. When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse, Out of the corner of my eye. I turned to look but it was gone. I cannot put my finger on it now. The child is grown, the dream is gone. I have become comfortably numb

28. U2 - Running to Stand Still
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 12:02 AM by Reciprocity
Running to Stand Still

And so she woke up
Woke up from where she was
Lying still
Said I gotta do something
About where we're going

Step on a steam train
Step out of the driving rain, maybe
Run from the darkness in the night
Singing ha, ah la la la de day
Ah da da da de day
Ah la la de day

Sweet the sin
Bitter taste in my mouth
I see seven towers
But I only see one way out

You got to cry without weeping
Talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice

You know I took the poison
From the poison stream
Then I floated out of here
Singing...ha la la la de day
Ha la la la de day
Ha la la de day

She runs through the streets
With her eyes painted red
Under black belly of cloud in the rain
In through a doorway she brings me
White gold and pearls stolen from the sea
She is raging
She is raging
And the storm blows up in her eyes
She will...

Suffer the needle chill
She's running to stand...

Still.

Yeeeeeeaaaaahhhhh!!!!!! oh you said anti-drug song? Forget that, oh that one by Afro Man is ok but they don't get much better.

There is much truth to rap lyrics which is why I listen to the music, most rappers tend to have a left-leaning political point a view. Here is a snip from Bricks and Marijauna.

When Jeb Bush pushing life
If I tout my weapon
Now Ronald Regan was selling guns
But he ain't a felon
A house on the hills with all these bills
I gots to sell 'em
My shawty waking up with out his Christmas
What the fuck I'ma tell 'em?
When I be juggling selling bricks?
Will heaven take me?
Now 25 plus life

36. Syd Barrett's solo albums.
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 12:42 AM by RandomKoolzip
The best argument for NOT taking psychedelics I can find: drop acid and be like Syd!

Also, listen to any Grateful Dead bootleg from 1986 to 95 and listen hard to Jerry's voice. There is a lot of pain involved in listening. But I'd consider his condition a fair warning.

Also:

"Teenager in a Box," Government Issue

"I'm Straight," Jonathan Richman

"Dear Mrs. Touma," Dag Nasty ("It's not the end of my world/sometimes I wish it was/I wouldn't wish it on anyone")

"Annihilate This Week," Black Flag (ironic?)

"King Heroin," James Brown

"I Will Buy You a New Life" and "Santa Monica," Everclear (seriously, these guys are SO underrated)

"Lie Dream of a Casino Soul," The Fall ("No nerves left Monday morning/I think I'll cut my dick off')

"Suspended in Air," New Kingdom (fuzzed-out monster-voiced underground hip hop from 1996; makes getting high sound as enjoyable as a root canal)

Pond's "Rock Collection" album from 1997 is like one long anti-heroin concept album; the lyrics are grim and plainspoken, paired with almost heartbreakingly sad melodies.

Others: Skip Spence's "Oar" album is another frightening flash from the depths of post-acid hell, like Syd Barrett.

46. Flying on the Ground is Wrong
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 03:35 AM by BareKnuckledLiberal
This was promoted as an anti-drug anthem in the 1960s, although it was nothing of the sort -- it's about the crazy feeling you get when you fall in love.

Neil Young wrote it early in his career, and it's on the first Buffalo Springfield album. I suspect that Mr. Young has had a good laugh over that at some time in the past 40 years.

Flying On The Ground Is Wrong
(Neil Young)

Is my world not falling down?
I'm in pieces on the ground
And my eyes aren't open and
I'm standing on my knees

But if crying and holding on
And flying on the ground is wrong
Then I'm sorry to let you down
But you're from my side of town
And I'll miss you

Turn me up or turn me down
Turn me off or turn around
I wish I could have met you in a place
Where we both belonged

But if crying and holding on
And flying on the ground is wrong
Then I'm sorry to let you down
But you're from my side of town
And I'll miss you

Sometimes I feel like I'm just a helpless child
Sometimes I feel like a king
But baby, since I have changed,
I can't take nothing home

City lights at a country fair
Never shine but always glare
If I'm bright enough to see you
You're just too dark to care

But if crying and holding on
And flying on the ground is wrong
Then I'm sorry to let you down
But you're from my side of town
And I'll miss you

52. Sam Stone by John Prine
Sam Stone came home to his wife and family,
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knee.
But the morphine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked.
With a purple heart and a monkey on his back.

There’s a hole in daddy’s arm where all the money goes.
Jesus Christ died for nothin’, I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears;
Don’t stop to count the years;
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Mmm mm mm mm.

Sam Stone’s welcome home didn’t last too long.
He went to work when he’d spent his last dime.
And Sammy took to stealing when he got that empty feeling,
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold rolled through his veins,
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose.
While the kids ran around wearin’ other peoples’ clothes.

There’s a hole in daddy’s arm where all the money goes.
Jesus Christ died for nothin’, I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears;
Don’t stop to count the years;
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Mmm mm mm mm.

Sam Stone was alone when he popped his last balloon,
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair.
Well, he played his last request,
While the room smelled just like death,
With an overdose hovering in the air.
But life had lost it’s fun an' there was nothing to be done,
But trade his house that he bought off a G.I. Bill,
For a flag-draped casket on a local hero’s hill.

There’s a hole in daddy’s arm where all the money goes.
Jesus Christ died for nothin’, I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears;
Don’t stop to count the years;
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Mmm mm mm mm.
Mmm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mmmmm.
