1. That depends.
Do you live in an earthquake or storm-prone area? Do you have a safe place to store the spent fuel rods? Do you have nuclear scientists and technicians to run the reactor properly? You will want to answer these questions before you purchase.

2. Well yeah, I live in California
And the spent rods, I was thinking about dumping them all in a river somewhere in Big Sur

Scientists and technicians? I don't need those! I'm 'Murican and I can do anything I want. I don't need any of that science stuff!

And I was thinking if things get hairy, I'll just dump the waste in the bay

4. I thought you were kidding, but now that I see you have a comprehensive plan
for all contingencies, I think you should go for it.

I think we live in the same state - do you mind if I run a really long extension cord over to grab some of your leftover power? (Obviously, I'd duct tape it down to avoid a tripping hazard...)

5. Sure! And also make sure there's no casing on the copper wire
That stuff is made from plastic, so for the ecology's sake leave it uncased

23. No mining required. Open your smoke detectors. That's the home variety.

9. That'd kick butt on Spare The Air days
'specially in winter when all your poor, fireplace-deprived neighbors are shivering while you bask in slightly radioactive comfort. :P

15. Ann Coulter says radiation is safe - so why not use the fuel rods to heat my bathtub?

10. DIY. How frickin hard could it really be?
(1) Put ad for uranium ore on Craigs list
(2) Build yourself a big old barn, like Marie Curie had:
http://www.chemteam.info.nyud.net:8090/Gallery/Radium-Shed-2.GIF
(3) Separate the uranium from ore in barn
(4) Order a bunch of big tanks of fluorine gas
(5) Spray fluorine gas on uranium to made uranium fluoride
(6) Put uranium fluoride in buckets and swing buckets around head to enrich uranium
(7) Make fuel from enriched uranium
(8) Assemble almost critical masses of enriched uranium into hot piles
(9) Pour water on hot piles of uranium to make steam
(10) Use steam to run steam-powered lightbulbs

13. Oh, foo! Anybody, who is willing to spray fluorine gas on uranium metal, won't worry much
about the possibility of contracting radiogenic cancer twenty or thirty years from now

You can't hardly find fuel for them anymore.
