12. Sansei
Or yonsei, depending how you look at it. Or, as some Hawaiian friends pointed out in college, a 'banana.' :P

Why the urgent need for nihongo? Test coming up?

17. No actually
My dad is nisei (2d generation American), and my mom, being native Japanese, is Issei. Which actually makes me either Sansei (3d gen) or Nisei, I guess.

Oregon-born, my Hawaii friends were at the U of O.

I was going to suggest 'Speed Tribes' as a cultural primer, but knowing that you were old enough to travel there in the 50s, I don't know if it'll be that useful :)

15. Uhhh, don't trust Shogun as a source for either language or culture
Now, for your first lesson, "dozo" doesn't mean "please, " except in the sense of "please go ahead." I know what all the phrasebooks say, but they're wrong in this case.

"Please" formally is "o-negai shimasu," informally "tanomu."

Probably your most useful phrase is

"Eigo, dekimasu ka?" "Can you speak English?"

"Benjo" is probably what was used for "rest room" in your day, but now people say "toire," which comes from "toilet."

"Ikura desu ka?" (EE-koo-ra des' ka?) "How much is it?"

That's enough for one session. Gambatte!
