13. Wiki Entry:
The Wire is an American television drama series set and produced in and around Baltimore, Maryland. Created and primarily written by author and former police reporter David Simon, the series was broadcast by the premium cable network HBO in the United States. The Wire premiered on June 2, 2002 and ended on March 9, 2008, comprising sixty episodes over five seasons.

Each season of The Wire focuses on a different facet of the city of Baltimore. They are, in chronological order: the illegal drug trade, the seaport system, the city government and bureaucracy, the school system, and the print news media. The large cast consists mainly of character actors who are little known for their other roles. Simon has said that despite its presentation as a crime drama, the show is "really about the American city, and about how we live together. It's about how institutions have an effect on individuals. Whether one is a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge or a lawyer, all are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution they are committed to."

Despite never enjoying large commercial success or winning major television awards, The Wire has been described by many critics as the greatest television series ever made and one of the most accomplished works of fiction of the 2000s. The show is recognized for its realistic portrayal of urban life, its literary ambitions, and its uncommonly deep exploration of sociopolitical themes.

35. If you have not seen it....you are missing out.
The writer did Homicide: Life on the Streets, and The Corner, and The Wire.
Now he is doing Treme.
Some of the best tv I have ever seen.

38. specifically about cops and drug dealers in Baltimore, but more generally
it's about the institution of the city itself. The first season starts with a group of drug dealers in the Baltimore projects and the specific police officers tasked to surveil and convict. Subsequent seasons incorporate other institutions--the fading unions at the city docks, the schools, city hall, and the press--while also keeping the primarily storyline. It's an amazing show with great dialogue, complex characters, and both insight and empathy.

Until that "epilogue"... Everything was still deliciously ambiguous. I'll stop watching after the scene with Adama sitting on the mountain.

15. Agree about Mad Men. It's the most captivating show I've seen.
The amount of time the show spends leaving the screen silent is amazing. Without anything much ever happening, Matt Weiner has built the most compelling characters I've ever seen on TV.

17. How about ONLY available on dvd
In the 15 years since it ended, Babylon 5 has never been licensed for syndication. It is only available on dvd. I'm watching that now. Although the picture is not up to today's HD standards, the story and acting are first-rate.

27. I'll second Babylon 5
I got hooked when it was first broadcast when I happened on an episode in progress. The captain was watching a breaking news feed from Earth Central Command, announcing the apprehension of some very bad people. The captain suspected that Earth's president had turned bad, and the news cast confirmed it as the very bad people were actually just dissidents, insisting on the rule of law instead of being stampeded by fear (sound familiar?). The pictures and names of the very bad people were flashing behind the newscaster, and included the name "Paul Jerrico," which rang a bell in my brain. The next desperado was "Dalton Trumbo" then "Ring Lardner" and I realized they were the names of the Hollywood 10, writers blacklisted early on during the post-World War II Red Scare for unamerican activities. That caught my attention for sure, and I own the whole series on DVD. I suppose I need to acquire the movies they made as well, just to round out the set.

33. I also watched it back when it was originally broadcast
It's interesting watching it now how similar certain aspects of the show are to the current climate in America. Notably the thoroughly corrupt government and absurdly compliant media (although ISN just says what the government wants them to say, while Fox News is completely in the pocket of one side).
