Guys at the hairdresser. Does this happen to you?
So I went to get my hair cut last week. It was a bit of a mess, to say the least. I get in, the girl asks me what I want, and I reply, giving what I thought were fairly reasonable instructions. Of course, I come out looking like I'm ready to be shipped off to Nam.
This happens every time I go to the hairdresser. No matter what I request, I get the exact same haircut. Do I have a default style or something? Not that I care, but it's bizarre how whatever length or state my hair is, it always comes out looking the same.
Personally, I think my mother is calling round all these hairdressers and telling them what she wants me to have before I come in.

That must be it.

1. Do you think it looks good or bad?

I'm guessing it doesn't look like this.

3. Could be worse. I look on this as a bizarre phenomenon.

I don't really care about the state of my hair. My dad was pretty much bald by my age, so I'm happy it stuck around.

2. As a former hair"stylist" ;) I have to say Yes.
You either have a default hairstyle or an overbearing mother.

Sorry.

9. That could be. Or it could be that the stylist thinks she knows what
is best for you. Since it always comes out the same maybe it is what's best for you. ;)

The majority of my clientele were men. Basically because I knew football and they felt a little more "at home" in the frou frouness of the shop.

5. Are you going to no-talent cost cutter hairdressers,
or to legitimately trained haircutters?

I've never had that problem, except at trivial places like Cost Cutters. In fact, oddly enough, I've had better haircuts from the immigrant Russian non-English speaking barbers who use electric shavers and stright edge razors than I've ever gotten at one of the BS chain "hair salons" like Cost Cutters, etc. Though, of course, the best haircuts/styling I've had have been from the legitimately trained hair stylist artists here in NYC, and even at one of the few good salons back in WI. One of my high school classmates was an excellent hair stylist, and I have long missed her input on my hair.

13. Find yourself a picture of what you want,
and take it with you.

or, if you ever find a ahirstylist who does your hair properly, make sure to get a picture of you the same day that you can keep with you always.

it's really sad, but even though hair stylists supposedly go to "school", so many of them are just crap in terms of dealing with something they don't understand.

And if there is anything weird about your hair, it is ESSENTIAL that you know about it. I have cowlicks all over, and if I'm going to some cheap ass place I make sure to tell them - I've fond they can deal witht he cowlicks if I tell them, but they don't have the intelligence to find them on their own.

But the few times I've been priveleged to have a real artist do my hair i've found that not only do I not have to tell them about the cowlicks, because they can see them as I walk up (somehow), but they are able to work with the cowlicks and come up with something absolutely extraordinary.

But if you have a picture, you're off to a good start, and, of course, find someone you like and go to them consistently and they and you will eventually come up with a system and an understanding of what you want and they will learn your hair.

But I wouldn't worry about it. I was just posting some sub-Seinfeld observational banter. It's really a non-issue.

19. Okey dokey
if it's a non-issue, that's fine. :-)

I just get excited about it because for me, it IS an issue, because with my cowlicks and odd hair it's been essential to me to find people who know what the hell they are doing, and cost-cutters people and other cheapo shit places don't cut it, except, for some reason, the immigrant non-english speaking barbers I've been to. Go figure.

I once had an incredible haircut with a real professional, and due to circumstances was forced later to have a hauircut at a cost-cutters, and the woman cutting my hair had the audacity to tell me, "Who cut your hair last? Whoever it was did a piss poor job". OMFG! I couldn't believe it!

10. My last haircut
and I had to stop myself from screaming or crying. I've had great haircuts but too many want to cut it short and overuse the thinning shears. Next time I'm going to tell them every snip to take.

I have given hairdressers carpal tunnel from making them use the thinning shears...I seriously have enough hair for 3 small villages of Guatemalan bald men...

21. heheh
I got my hair cut this afternoon for the first time since August. I have the opposite problem - they're reluctant to cut it as short as I want.

I go in, and say buzz it using 3/4" clippers. They always argue with me. "You don't really want that, do you?!" I have nice hair, I guess, and it gets sorta wavy and nice when longer, but hard to maintain. So I get it buzzed. And EVERY time I do that, I have to convince them that I haven't lost a bet.

30. I'm desparate. I look like Zeke -the-Freak.
I was going to get a haircut before closing the other day. I didn't. I showed up at the lawyers' office in Greenville with long hair, un-trimmed beard, in bib-overalls and a Pendleton shirt. I looked borderline homeless. However, they took my money without blinking an eye. I think I have already pissed Greenville off. Over politics. Fuck 'em. I'm getting ready to entrench and make my damn left-wing mark. It will all be about what is "right, fair, and good for everyman".
