'I'm Not a Hetero, But I Play One On TV': 12 Gay Actors Who Took on Straight Roles - and Proved the Naysayers Wrong"

http://www.afterelton.com/tv/gay-actors-playing-straight-jonathan-groff-glee-neil-patrick-harris-russell-tovey?page=0%2C3

Though openly-gay Newsweek journalist Ramin Setoodeh’s infamous 2010 article “Straight Jacket” was certainly a misguided piece of criticism, it unfortunately brought to light an all-too-common misconception held by both Hollywood decision makers and members of the public at large – that gay actors are incapable of adequately portraying straight characters on-screen.

History, of course, shows that ludicrous assertion to be entirely false – particularly considering the number of closeted gay actors from earlier eras who vaulted to stardom specifically because they were able to convincingly portray straight romantic leads.

Of course, those were much more intolerant times – times in which actors were continuously pressured to hide their sexuality for fear they’d be rejected if the truth came out (a sadly valid point in those days). Now, however – while we still have a long way to go – there’s an emerging crop of openly-gay actors who are proving it’s possible to thrive in Hollywood despite the public’s awareness of their sexual orientation.

I'll tell you this much - the 2 names that shocked me the most on that list - Guillermo Diaz and Paul Winfield. I love Weeds and Guillermo Diaz plays the pervy Mexican gang leader who has hit on Nancy Botwin enough times. I had no clue the guy was gay in RL. But seriously, my jaw hit the ground with legendary actor Paul Winfield - I guess he's played the Dad or Granddad so many times everyone just assumed he was straight or at least I did.

1. I was not surprised by Rock Hudson
because it was pretty much known throughout Hollywood and he died of AIDS,

2. The rest on the list either I didn't know who they were or I knew they were gay
Although even with Rock Hudson, Richard Chamberlain and Neil Patrick Harris - I didn't know until they came out of the closet.

But the article is right - there has always been this mis-perception that a gay main can't play straight in Hollywood. I think one of the biggest waste of talent has always been Rupert Everett. Although he did straight parts with British films (he's a brit native), in Hollywood they would only cast him as the 'gay-buddy' and I don't think he was ever able to get a straight role in Hollywood.

4. Neil Patrick Harris plays such a womanizer, an extremely hetero character
that I really got a kick out of it when he came out.

10. Interesting that that kind of thing is not uncommon..(oops, edited to spell "interesting" correctly)

Bulldog from Frasier was like that (also openly gay actor). And Amanda Bearse, Marcy from Married With Children , is openly gay and played an utterly man-crazy character...

Also gratifying that Albuquerque proudly claims Neil as a hometown boy made good, and his sexuality never seems to be an issue .

19. It's not the crossdressing that's the tipoff. It's the style sense and
creativity.

12. I saw one reference to that in the web hits
the funny thing is, Bulldog was a caricature of a misogynistic, womanizing hetero pig.

16. Exactly; in a lesser (or maybe not lesser) way, so is Barney's character on How I Met Your Mother
Edited on Fri Jun-03-11 02:55 PM by abq e streeter
And Marcy was an over the top caricature of a man-crazy woman too, although the writers sort of bounced back and forth between that and her being an over the top strident feminist too. But she was very aggressively hetero either way.

11. Frasier was a test to a person's gaydar, which I know mine failed
I had no clue about John Mahoney until years after Frasier was off the air.

13. I remember Diaz's role in Law & Order
He creeped me out! He played a murderer that accused Lenny (Jerry Orbach) of groping him or beating him- something like that. Great actor.

24. I think everyone on "Bewitched" was gay, except Samantha.
And the original Darren. But Endora, Maurice, Uncle Arthur (obviously: Paul Lynde didn't even try to stay in the closet) and Dr Bombay all were. Even Tabitha grew up to be gay.

I loved it in the 60s, and now seeing reruns, the gay, subversive subtext is hilarious.
