What do you love that everyone else hates?
I tend to go against the flow of popular opinion.

My biggest rebellion is this: I really like the Matrix sequels. I've got the ten disc box set and everything. But everyone else just hates them.

1. The Matrix sequels were so disappointing
The story set up was quite promising, then everything just went to Predictable Land. A lot of imaginative elements were introduced early on, then just withered on the vine as the lure and the grip of the CGI became irresistible. Every now and then, I sample the last two Matrix movies if they're on FX or something, but lordy! What a waste.

But then, I really liked the miniseries "Masada" from many years ago. So what do I know? Best exchange: David Warner, local general, making his case to Peter O'Toole, Roman bigshot, for why he hasn't concluded his campaign against the Jewish zealots, finishes, "I did my best." O'Toole sneers, "The epitaph of a donkey."

12. Yeah, I've had that thought. I used to say it about SPAM, but frankly that's got decent ingredients
I won't list them, but lets just say it is far superior to "potted meat food product", which is the classification Dinty Moore Beef Stew falls under. On a funny trivia note: The word "SPAM" is a contraction of "spiced ham". The FUNNY part is that there is exactly one spice in SPAM: salt.

Rutabagas. Dad and I are the only ones in the family that like rutabagas. Every Thanksgiving Dad would buy one rutabaga, cut it up for Mom and he and I would be the only ones that would eat it, though some family members would take a token cube of rutabaga to be polite. I'm not sure what they are doing now that Dad can't handle cutting one up.

I think she has one of the most distinctive and incredible voices out there. And "Waterworld"? Well, it's one of the best late night I've had a bunch to drink but don't want to go to bed yet movies. Sure there's a lot of corny stuff in it, especially the ending. But I love the scenes when he's out to sea. Makes me want to be there.

81. Classical music and a lot of operas.
Edited on Sat Jun-04-11 12:21 AM by Manifestor_of_Light
Everybody I've met who say they don't like opera have NEVER BEEN TO ONE. They don't know how amazing they are now.

I love Mozart and Puccini and some others. i even sat through five hours and fifteen minutes (total time including intermissions) of PARSIFAL, Wagner's last opera, and enjoyed it. I'm not crazy about Wagner. But I enjoyed it immensely. They can keep all of Richard Strauss' operas.

Folks, when you go to the opera now, it's FUN. They have the same amazing lights and special effects that other stage shows have. And they put the words up OVER THE STAGE in ENGLISH!! Even if they are singing in ENGLISH!
That means you can know what is going on!!

The love duets have almost become the horizontal bop.

I am one of those annoying people who sings along with "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Giovanni".

As far as the symphony, check out Gustavo Dudamel and the L.A. Philharmonic. Good stuff.

I love Celine Dion, except for that suckwad song from Titanic, but she didn't write it.
They used to make fun of her on SNL and she has an excellent voice.

Hated the last Batman movie, The Dark Knight. Thought it was the most violent and pointless waste of film I have ever seen. Nothing but people killing other people in a bank robbery, threatening pretty girls with knives, and making sure that the message is that Rich White Men are IMPORTANT. Their thoughts are important, their actions are important, and we must watch them.

They are full of inflated powerful male ego and I can't care about them. There is no reason to.

They have servants who are far better actors than they are and far more dignified (Sir Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman), but that doesn't matter. No human relationships. No reason for me to give a damn about any of those people killing each other.

I don't like ballet. I don't understand it. I think it's quite unnatural. I have played numerous ballet suites in orchestra but that is not the same as watching the dance. The music can be quite interesting. I've played the following ballets in orchestras: Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring, The Firebird, Bartok: The Miraculous Mandarin, Chopin: Les Sylphides, Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Rodgers: Oklahoma!, Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Delibes:Coppelia. That's the ones I can recall immediately.

I have no use for hip hop, rap or country sung by people with clothespins on their noses.
I like Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson because they don't sing that way.

Any other cultural critiques you need from me?

98. One question: Have you ever BEEN to an opera?
If you have never been to a professional opera production, you don't know what you are saying. Live is NOT the same as seeing it on TV or a tape. Just asking.

most people enjoy the standards: Carmen, Tosca, Don Giovanni, Madame Butterfly, The Elixir of Love, Marriage of Figaro, Aida.

I studied Baroque stuff for years as a piano and violin student. I think vivaldi is about as boring as it gets.

I like acappella groups like Anonymous Four and the Tallis Scholars.

i studied the Bach Unaccompanied Sonatas and Partitas and they are so difficult they warp your brain.
My violin teachers would only give me Bach and Mozart, to develop technique. They wouldn't let me study mushy Romantic era stuff.

Now they crank out musicians who all sound the same. They don't have the 19th century Romantic heritage of putting personality into your playing, like Fritz Kreisler and Arthur Rubinstein did.

i saw Arthur Rubinstein play a full piano recital when he was 82 years old. i was in high school. So I got to see one of the last living exponents of romantic playing.

111. Yes, surtitles make it all understandable.
I tell people that all the time, but they don't listen to me.

Domingo's version of Tosca with Catherine Malfitano is an excellent video. Great scenery in Rome, and great singing.

They have higher TV standards (more scan lines) in Europe than they do in the US, so even though I have a VHS tape of it, it looks like it's straight off a studio monitor.

And yes, Tosca does the Nestea Plunge off the REAL Castel Sant' Angelo in Rome.

I thought it was playful, inventive, and a charming choice for a young, modern woman.

159. The song dancing queen....
I was on the rapid train here in Cleveland back in 1976 and I had just heard the song before I got on.

While I was standing there, because it was rush hour, this lovely young lady sidled up to me, looked up at me with her sparkling eyes until I had to say hi!

We ended up dating for a little while until I found out she was 15. I was 19 and a sophomore in college. She had told me she was 17 and a senior in high school.

Nothing untoward ever happened, I just felt that it was not right for a 19 year old man to be seeing a 15 year old girl.

Oh she was cute and more.

So everytime I hear Dancing Queen I think of her...

Edited on Mon Jun-13-11 10:46 PM by mvd
It seems I'm always in the minority with this one.

I also like some pop music that many hate (I actually think Ke$ha is pretty good), The Olive Garden, Big Brother (the reality TV show), some cheesy comedies, soap operas, etc.

162. Titanic the movie.
I don't know why almost everyone seems to have hated it. I especially liked the music.

The only part I didn't like in the movie was when old Rose threw the gem overboard. If she didn't want it, she could have sold it and donated the money to any number of worthy causes.

170. I don't.
And if it matters, I thought that Reloaded and Revolutions (as a combined viewing exp.) were BETTER than the first film. I also think that if Hollywood had any real balls left, they would have been released as a single, 4 hour epic with an INTERMISSION (remember those?=))

But I "get" those films in a way most other people don't (philosophically, spiritually, logically, etc. The Philosopher's commentary track alone is worth the price of any good box set you can buy, IMHO.)

Also, in my family, I seem to be unique in that I don't think Liberals are dirty.....

184. Women with body hair
I am a heterosexual male who has had a liking for body hair on women since being an adolescent.

I particularly like a woman who is otherwise attractive, and who has serious and significant body hair (i.e. more than just a little), and who lets her body hair grow out, and who likes and is not ashamed of her natural state and her natural hair. I find such a woman to be very sexy.

I have always particularly liked hairy or unshaven legs on women, but I also like hair on a woman's arms, underarms, and especially on and around more private and intimate regions of a woman's body.

I have always been bothered that just about anything else is or has been acceptable at some time since the 1960's, except for natural body hair on women. I really think it is crazy, and a crime, really, that women practically have to go through all kinds of pain and trouble to remove any and all body hair, and look like plastic Barbie dolls.

Being gay or lesbian is now widely (even if not universally) accepted and talked about, and I see no reason that that should not be the case with women having body hair, or with liking women with body hair.

I know that there are other men (and women too) who like women with body hair. I have been posting for a number of years on an adult chat board devoted to discussion of female body hair.
