Images of Budapest from last week

From the Buda hills:

from the river:

The Gellért, with thermal baths right underneath (stayed there in 1982):

Overlooking the Danube from our hotel room

At the main market in Pest:

Me and Mrs. DFW at the Café Central, where the pastries, to a cardiac patient are assault with a deadly weapon
(though you die happy):

A bridge across the Danube at night (little blurred, sorry):

Early morning shot of the Danube from our hotel room, with buildings on the Buda side reflecting on the water:

1. It's a really beautiful city.
I visited for a few days about 15 years ago. Only place I've been to where learning a little German was really helpful (including Germany).

Nice pics.

2. My dear DFW...
These are beautiful pictures; thank you for all of them.

I've only been there once, and due to a stupid fall, only got to see a little of Buda.

I have a very similar picture of the bridge over the Danube in the evening; I'll see if I can find it.

I think you're very lucky to be close enough to see such wonderful sights!

3. Here's my picture of the bridge over the Danube:
It was taken from the window of our little river cruise ship, at twilight:

9. Mrs. remains a phenomenon of permanent wonder to me
I just got lucky, I guess.

I'll check on your PM and reply this week. It's not yet 7 a.m., and I've been on the road for almost 2 hours
already (writing from a train between Köln and Paris). I am almost awake, but not quite.

17. Dvorák?
Edited on Thu Jun-09-11 09:24 AM by DFW
Dvorák was Czech, not Hungarian, unless I got my ethnics mixed up! (the r should have a thingy above it, but it won't paste)

If I did, report me to the House Ethnics Committee.

Oops, it's House Ethics Committee. Never mind.

11. It has probably changed less since 2006
I was last there in 1982 in the days of "socialism." Almost no one learned English back then, and
I was spit on and threatened with violence when I tried using Russian. German seemed to be their
language of preference for contact with the outside world. Now, you don't get spit on any more for
trying Russian, but you don't find many who understand it any more, either. Even German seems to be
the second foreign language of preference, having been replaced with English. I still get weird stares
with what little Hungarian I know, as I was taught by a friend from Transylvania, where their Hungarian
has a very distinctive accent, which I apparently also have when I try to speak my few words. Of course,
since their language is incredibly complicated, they are thrilled that any non-native speaker would
make the effort to learn any Hungarian at all, so Transylvanian accent or not, I got plenty of smiles.

10. Yes, trash pickup has improved
Once you get Soviet tanks out of the main thoroughfares, walking around is a lot less cumbersome.

16. I'll have to take your word for that
I was 4 years old in Virginia at the time.

Somehow, it does seem logical, though.

15. Hi Ellen!
Day job is a bit demanding these days. Plus I have to go into the hospital to get my inner ear repaired.
Plus I am working to put the finishing touches on my first novel. Plus I have to fit about 3 months' work
into the next 4 weeks. Plus............

Well, you get the idea. There is no rest for the weary.

19. Detroit, eh?
OK, if that is the basis for comparison, then I guess I should agree that the places I'm weary in are
somewhat more pleasant. Although where I am today (Brussels) can be pretty dreary when it rains, which
is almost always.

I actually really enjoy other peoples' vacation photos. Add Budapest to the list of places I'd like to visit.
