Why can't I have a pet beaver?

Get your damn mind out of the gutter!

Having said that - aren't they adorable?

1. I have found that they can cost a LOT of money
And they make very heavy demands on your time. Also, you have to keep them clean, or they tend to smell, uh, not so fresh.

2. Yeah, I was going to reverse that in a copycat thread but it would have been removed.
Besides - I'm married - not a problem.

Cute pictures - but they get bigger and have HUGE teeth. The rodents, I mean.

5. Well my cats already destroy furniture so not sure how this would differ
I'd just keep a supply of firewood out back and have a logtoy for the beaver's use.

8. Cats scratch furniture. Beavers can cut through a 10-inch tree.
It will take a beaver two seconds to cut through a table leg.

9. Yep. Do you remember when a beaver was destroying Cherry Blossom Trees
near the Tidal Basin a few years back. Much distress here about it. Nobody wanted to hurt the beaver really, but they did very much want them away from the trees..

11. Think about this - I could train my beaver and use it for cheap tree cutting service
Can't use my cat to make any money

16. True however...
getting the beaver to only cut certain trees, only the ones you want, might be a bit difficult:D

6. They are so cute!
Especially the babies! My furniture is pretty much destroyed by my kitties but I'm thinking I'd like to keep my woodwork intact.
A FB friend posts pictures of her hedgehogs, I would like one of those.

14. I stumbled across a beaver while talking a walk on Belle Isle (an island park in the Detroit River).
.... earlier this week. It was very hostile.

19. We had one living at the end of our street years ago.
Out here in central Oakland County. My sister was in high school then (1970s). She would come home and say "I saw a beaver" then "I saw the beaver again" when she got off the bus. My dad kept telling her it had to be a muskrat, there weren't any beavers in this area, hadn't been for years.

Well, after about a month of this, we were all in the station wagon (it WAS the 70s!) going to the store one Saturday morning, and lo and behold a beaver waddled right across the road about 20 feet in front of us in slow motion. Dad had to eat crow that day.

20. They're more common around here than I thought they were.
I was surprised to see one on Belle Isle, but one of the city workers told me they're regulars there.

18. Some people say Beavers smell bad. I can't put my finger on it but...
...There's something about them.

I also hear beavers can come without fur...

23. I don't want a dam beaver for a pet
First, they're wild animals and love to chew on wood. If they can't chew on the wood from a tree, they'll eventually chew down the frame of your house, and that will not be a pretty sight. I don't think homeowner's or renter's insurance will cover beaver damage.

Second, your cat or cats will likely think of the beaver as a tasty meal. Beavers are rodents and cats have a taste for rodent flesh. Kitty might think of beaver as a giant mouse.

25. This is the front teeth of a beaver. In the world of Cats vs. Beavers
I wouldn't disregard the fighting power of a beaver. Some of these critters weigh as much or even moreso than your standard house cat.

26. those teeth are why your wood furnature wouldn't stand a chance
they need to gnaw to keep those massive teeth in check. Otherwise they keep growing and cause all kinds of problems for the beaver.

28. I would just keep a pile of firewood handy
Hamsters are the same way with their teeth - if they don't chew on something their teeth will grow out of control.

So each day I'd bring in a fresh piece of wood for my pet beaver to chew on

:D
