I was a kid, twelve I think. We lived in Biloxi MS. Apparently Jayne and her kids (jeez, can you imagine?) and I think her manager were driving late night from Florida to New Orleans on Hwy 90, when they got into the DDT fog from a mosquito fogger and ran into the back of a logging truck. And yes, she was decapitated.

That's all obvious but what I experienced was the amazing follow-up, the next Sunday when every little strutting rooster of a preacher on the coast preached hell out of "Jezebel" and "wanton women" and it impressed hell out of me how it was fine for them to parade themselves onstage but not her. I think my feminist roots, oddly enough, began with Jayne Mansfield.
