Trouble with USB device
I got a jump drive (Lexar) and had the same problem with a SONY Memory drive.

The computer does know that new hardware was installed. It should mount in My Computer when I plug it in, but I have to restart to make it show.

I have an Intel 850 board (RamBus) Win XP. I intalled the update for USB from MicroShaft and it didn't help the USB problem, but it knocked the sound out, so I restored.

Restarting is a usable workaround, but I want it to work right.

Anybody got the answer? Thanks.

2. I tried Microsoft...
I had the SONY device previously, and I tried Lexar. They have drivers for W98. It says the device is working properly and there is no driver upgrade that I can find.

3. I have the same problem sometimes.
When I do I just close and reopen "My Computer." If that doesn't do it, I'll start Word, or whatever appropriate program to open the file, and use the Open command and pulldown menu to find the file. Of course, sometimes I need to use the Open command twice too, as the drive doesn't always show up there on the first try.

Those suggestions have always worked for me. Good luck. :)

5. Thanks...
Amazing how some computer problems give in to persistence.

4. If you are using W2K...
That's about as good as it's going to get. USB doesn't doesn't work as smoothly on W2K as other Windows platforms. That's been my experience, anyhow.

6. You can check your system settings
There you can see if the item is installed correctly. It sounds like it isn't. What I would do would be to uninstall the device, then install the Windows XP driver, rather than the old Windows 98 one provided by the vendor.

The native XP drivers seem to work better to me.

7. I'm using the XP drivers
There is an update that has something to do with USB. It doesn't solve my problems but disables the sound.

The system says the device is working properly. (It might be Republican.)
