Great movies about people with a disability?

Inside Moves with John Savage as Roary is one of my all-time favorites.

1. heh, I was going to say Inside Moves
Since it is so little known. A True Gem. A nice return to acting for Harold Russell also.

Russell's previous film The Best Years of our Lives made 34 years before is not entirely about people with disabilities but his scene showing how his artificial arms worked and showing his girlfriend what life would be like married to him is unequaled and the one of most intimate scenes I have ever seen in any film.

11. The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter
With Alan Arkin as a deaf mute, and with a very young Sondra Locke. Wonderful sad story.

The only reason I ever saw the movie in the first place is that the house Arkin's character rents a room in belonged to relatives of my mother during the Depression. When my grandfather had to leave their farm, her family shared that house with the relatives for a few years. Mom heard that the house was used in the movie and got me to go to the theater with her to see it.

29. One of the really remarkable things is how they portray
Life in a Southern town of that period without shoving the issues in your face. It is all very low key. But it brought back how insular those little towns were, how they limited people's choices. The way Mick yearns for music and how impossible it seems to her that she might get a chance to even hear it. The way the doctor does not want to treat a white man, even one whose position in life is so much lower than his own.

I grew up in a small Southern town not a lot different than that one and do not have fond memories of the experience.

Watching it last week also reinforced the feeling that we could be returning to those times in some ways, with choices limited not only by economic circumstances but because our social systems are closing down.

Hi,
Was hoping to see this on the list. I have to agree a very well made movie I thought and I liked the way it "showed" the way her mind works. What a fascinating person and she has contributed a lot of good to the world of humans and animals.

Peace

43. Another great Emily Watson movie - "Hilary and Jackie"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0150915/combined

It's an very well done biopic about Jacqueline Du Pré, who back in the 70s was one of the premiere Cellists in the world. Turned out she had multiple sclerosis, which ended her career before she was 30. The story showed the very volitile relationship between Jackie and her sister Hilary, a flautist who never quite had the same level of success but did find true love. (Rachel Griffith did a great turn as Hilary)

61. I had the privilege of seeing Jacqueline duPre perform in the late sixties.
She burned up more energy than any fiddler I have ever seen. When i say "fiddler" i mean "classical string player" -- violin, viola, cello, or bass.

She played the Elgar Cello Concerto and was absolutely amazing. Emily Watson did a great job of portraying her.

Look up Jacqueline's videos on YouTube. She was an amazing cellist at age 19!

45. The Lost Prince, The King's Speech
The King's Speech is certainly one for your list and The Lost Prince is about that King's little brother John.

Prince John had epilepsy and what was probably a form of Autism. The Royal family sent the boy away to live on a farm outside of London to avoid the "embarrassment" he might cause in public.

Good film.

64. A good one: THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Other Side of the Mountain is a 1975 American film based on a true story of ski racing champion Jill Kinmont.

In early 1955, Kinmont was the national champion in slalom and was a top U.S. prospect for a medal in the 1956 Winter Olympics, a year away. She was paralyzed in a near-fatal downhill accident at the Snow Cup in Alta, Utah, weeks before her 19th birthday, leaving her quadraplegic.
