I paint, therefore I am
The kitchen was just going to be a "little" project, since we're hiring someone to do the countertop and the floor and we're keeping the cabinets. Just a li'l painting, right? HAHAHAHA. Mr. eileen patches, sands and primes, and these delicate digits have painted for two days. (Jeebus, my nails are a HORROR. Wait'll my nail lady sees them on Wednesday. She will have the vapors.)

We redid our first house when we were young and poor. Now we're old and not-so-poor and the house we bought 10 years ago that was "done" when we moved is slowly but surely getting "redone." Butttt - call me nuts (and they do) but we really love doin' stuff like this together. We're a li'l stiffer at the end of the day and we move a tad slower, but we've got the radio, an endless supply of beer, and many, many stoopid mistakes with accompanying laughter. And it just hit me all of a sudden that even after 30 years of marriage and three grown kids, - some things really do not change.

Tired and happy and feelin' like a kid again.

1. hey same here
We put in two French doors (that makes a total of four on my house now) today. We had the help of our two all-round handy guys who are not just good construction workers but know plumbing and electricity. We are putting leaded glass over the French door that opens to the exterior.

The interior French door is a pocket door.

We raised the ceiling on the entry room and now have a cathedral ceiling there.

We took everyone out to dinner and then came home and admired the new look outside for awhile.

Congratulations on your new look, Eileen! It is a satisfying feeling once these projects are done, isn't it?

2. There's something about getting "lost" in a task...
When the work sort of takes over, and during your efforts, there's no sense of time passing, there's no feeling of drudgery (which is always a shock to me), and you actually feel more carefree.

It even qualifies as a form of active meditation, doing a task with joy, and feeling it connect you to your youth.

Nice post, eileen! :)

3. Eileen, I've been up here painting my mountain house for 6 months.
OK, off-and-on, but mostly on. Lotsa high gable work requiring lotsa ladders (24-ft extension, 10-ft step, 8-ft step, 5-ft step, and 3-ft step). When I am working on the high walls, I spend more time moving ladders than anything else. When on the high ladders, I work very slowly and carefully.

Today I painted from about 9 am until 7 pm, with scarcely a break. It was Kilz prime until about 3 pm. Then I cut the corners and edged the two main floor baths (where I stripped wallpaper, patched drywall, and cussed over the last 7 days).

Tomorrow I will roll the baths, then put a third coat of Kilz (over a deep green) on the master bedroom walls. I'll start painting over the Kilz an hour later. Lotsa high gable work in the master bedroom, too. Should have it finished in time to watch 60-Minutes.
