"Why Netflix's Price Hike Doesn't Bother Me"
Edited on Thu Jul-14-11 03:28 PM by S_E_Fudd
Good article on Netflix's recent price changes...and how it stacks up against other alternatives...

Bottom line...still a good deal!

The question, if we can see past the crazy net rage for just a moment, should be what's a fair price for a service like Netflix's. I'm all for putting the screws to companies that bilk customers, but is that really what Netflix is up to?

Techland editor Doug Aamoth compiled a list of Netflix alternatives this morning. There's Blockbuster, which lets you rent one video disc at a time for $12 a month (but $4 more than Netflix). There's Redbox, with its $1 per day fee—not bad at all, except you have to return the discs a day later, and if you watch more than eight shows a month, you're back at Netflix pricing, plus out the travel time and gas to-from your nearest Redbox unit (that, and Redbox's rental selection is trifling). There's Hulu Plus, similarly priced at $8 a month for streaming-only, but, well, it's streaming only, and the selection's tiny, unless you're into often obscure TV shows and films. There's Amazon Prime Instant Video, but like Hulu Plus, the selection's prohibitively limited, and unless you're a Prime member ($79 a year) you'll pay $2.99 for each two-day rental.

1. It's not the price hike, it's the nothing in return.
When the price of a product or service doubles, I expect something more in return than just a lighter wallet.

2. So..
If a company raises the price of a loaf of bread ...you expect to get more bread?

6. If a company doubles the price of a loaf of bread overnight for no apparent reason
and then the head of that company tells disillusioned bread purchasers to "suck it up, it's just the cost of a couple of your lattes," I stop buying bread from that company. Netflix needs some PR help.

8. First of all they did not double the price....
At the high end it was a 60% increase...which if course is a massive $6 a month...

If you use streaming only or disc only...your cost is going down...

The reaction is wholly out of proportion with the announcement...

People act as if a Netflix membership at the current price is some sort of god-given right.

Also, if you could point to the link that had the quote from the CEO of Netflix telling people to "suck it up" I would appreciate it...

10. My plan effectively doubled.
1 DVD at a time and unlimited streaming is $9 now. Same service come September is $16. That's close enough to doubling.

Here's a discussion on Netflix's pathetic attempt at tamping down the rage:

3. Then call it what it is when you send me the email telling me about the 'change'
It's not that they think double billing is so fricking swell - it's the fact that they have to raise money on one of their services for whatever reason they have to raise it. Then sending the email with not once saying "Yes we realize this is a price increase but we hope by giving you more options you'll stick with us"

4. I thought they were pretty clear about what they were doing and why...
Edited on Thu Jul-14-11 04:07 PM by S_E_Fudd
They were very clear in the email I got that they were splitting the two into separate services...

If I keep both (stream and mail - and I will keep both) my price goes up $6.00. For those that only get discs and don't stream, you are getting a price drop...

They listed my current sub fee and my new one in the email...if I keep both my price goes up $6.

In fact here it is:

We are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into two separate plans to better reflect the costs of each.

Your current $14.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:

Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 2 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $11.99 a month

Your price for getting both of these plans will be $19.98 a month ($7.99 + $11.99). You don't need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.

These prices will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011.

Pretty clear to me what was happening. As you can see if I didn't use the streaming, my price would actually drop if I went with the disk only plan.

I really do not understand the hullabaloo about this...like people are taking it as a personal affront that a company wants to make a profit.

on edit: remove redundant sentence :)

5. So many of these companies are still trying to figure out the best revenue structure
as for the fact they did not brag that they were raising prices I do hope the same consideration will be taken for every other thing that is either more expensive or a smaller quantity.

Some seem to think that companies should take out special advertising space and be forced to disclose their insidious desires to make a profit.

7. We're opting for streaming only
It would be nice if they'd broaden their streaming library so that 70% of their "new arrivals" aren't 80's made-for-tv movies and SyFy rejects.

It would also be cool if they'd improve the interface. There's absolutely no reason that the onscreen search/browse function can't be as flexible as the searches that they support on the website.

9. I hate looking at the "new arrivals"
I want to see what is new to the world, not new to the Netflix cabinet.
