4. Poncho and Lefty alone is enough to canonize the guy.

Still, what a waste. When you look at the quality and quantity of the man's work from the late 60s to mid 70s, and then look at everything after, it's terrible to think how much art was stolen from us because of booze. There's all the rock star cliches of a bright light burning twice as fast, but for such a warm and talented guy to end up in such a pathetic way is just sad. (And I say that, mind you, as a man who enjoys his booze.)

5. He was probably bipolar - back then there weren't that good of meds for it

Most highly creative people, 'geniuses' in Van Zandt's case (he tested as a genius as a teen), felt the old meds would 'turn off' what made them them. Some say the current meds do that to an extent.

Sad sad story...

7. Have you listened to his "Live From the Old Quarter" album yet?

It's my favorite - it's a live double album with virtually all of his best material without the horrible 70s Nashville production on his studio albums. It's also full of terrible jokes that are somehow made really funny by his deadpan delivery.

8. Listening to that now

All of his fans, including Mr Earle, suggested to get that album.

It's amazing, and the terrible jokes are made funny by the delivery - but also a melancholy note permeates them all knowing what would eventually happen to him.

Certainly if you hate country music and know nothing about TVZ you could love the film, but if you hated TVZ maybe not (hard to figure that taste, after all ;)). But it's a great documentary in its own right, for sure.
