Poll question: Favorite thing to put on fresh corn on the cob...
Multiples are unfortunately impossible with the polls, so if you choose a spice, butter/margarine will be assumed simply because without it the spice just won't stick to the damn ear.

1. I don't know "old bay" and paprika, isn't paprika tasteless?
Can someone explain paprika and old bay?

2. Old Bay (brand name) is THE crab spice. Paprika is far from tasteless - well, unless it's McCormick
or one of the other mass-produced shit spices that are about a decade old before they sit in a grocer store for another decade before someone purchases them.

8. In a word, "no". You have to experience good paprika to know the flavor.
It does have a bit of a bite to it but I wouldn't call it hot. It will definitely liven up an ear of corn! I like it best on really sweet corn, sort of to offset it a little. Paprika is simply ground bell pepper and can range from really mild to fairly hot. I get it in bulk bags from a local Indian grocery, the same place I get most of my lentils and other legumes and of course my garam masala. As for the "no flavor" comment, you might be thinking of tumeric which has a REALLY subtle flavor but is often used simply for coloring.

3. Old Bay (as in Chesapeake Bay guys) is for CRABS and shrimp.
Putting it on corn is SACRILEDGE (LaurenG Old Bay is a spicy reddish pepper that is generally put on seafood around here, I've never EVER seen it on corn)

7. I don't generally like spicy stuff..
but old bay on shrimp is wonderful. I just can't see it on corn though. Its a powerful flavor that would overwhelm the delicate corn flavor. It works well with seafood though.

13. NONONONO
I won't even put butter on Silver Queen. Down here anyway, its so sweet to put anything on it ruins it...I went to a corn roast a few years back, Seriously, fresh out of the field right off the grill I ate it with nothing and its still one of the most enjoyable things I've ever eaten....

10. I shuck the corn, cover it in a mixture of salt, butter and Redneck Pepper, wrap it in tinfoil...
and throw it on the grill. After letting it cool a sec, it can go straight from your grill to your mouth, no further mussing needed.

14. When my uncle was in his hippie days (yellow chevy van with a canoe on top), he took us camping...
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 11:05 AM by HopeHoops
This involved soaking corn in water while in the husk and then putting it in the coals of the fire with the husks to protect it. We ate burnt corn that night but I don't think he cared too much because he was pretty well toked up by the time we got around to eating. I think we burned potatoes in the coals also, but I don't remember for sure. I'm fairly certain he wouldn't remember either.

On Edit: He cooked that way because "that's the way the Indians cooked".

23. Lol. as far as cooking on open coals on the ground, I recommend Hobo Stew
You take a layer of tinfoil, then cover it in cabbage, and then cover that in the parings from a carrot. Then you take the chopped up inside of the carrot, plus whatever other vegetables you've got, plus ground beef, and throw it all in there. Wrap it up, throw it on the coals for a half hour, and eat.

19. nothing
I used to be a butter person but then the butter ran out before it reached me, so I ate it plain.

It is so much better without butter.

20. Normally I'm a big fan of butter in food, but...
I have a real taste for those "I can't believe it's not butter" type sprays on corn. They just taste more buttery than butter on corn to me, and stay on the corn better.

26. Butter. and Salt
Lately though, just salted butter. I grew up eating the corn grown in the Hurley Flats in upstate NY, and if I'm visiting when it's in season, will bring a bag back to VA.

I was at a farmer's market in NoVa a few years ago, and they were offering corn on the cob with lime, butter and hot sauce...delicious!

I bought a few ears from a local Wegman's two weeks ago, and it was not bad at all!

I've tried a few of the Pain is Good batches, and yes they were hot, but they just didn't have a well-rounded flavor. Cute labels!

I think it's a family thing, because I have never seen or heard of anyone else using sour cream on their corn.

It's REALLY good, though. :9
