Its my first Monday as an unemployed person
What should I do?

Biking to the grocery store for the first time in my adult life is on the agenda.

1. Go to the library and get to know your local library staff.
Pick out a book you've always wanted to read, plus one you think you "should" read.

Make a list of 10 dishes with affordable ingredients you want to be able to prepare and eat on a regular basis, quickly and easily. Research recipes.

Take a walk.

Think about what you really, really, REALLY want to be doing with the rest of your life.

Write one chatty email to someone who'd love to hear from you.

Relax.

Each day you are "unemployed" try to accomplish three things:

One constructive action toward achieving re-employment.
One constructive action toward living a healthier, happier life.
One action that represents care and support of yourself NOW.

If you can discipline yourself to accomplish those three things every day, you can help stave off that "at loose ends" feeling that can lead to depression and negativity.

Good luck!

Being unemployed can be terrible, or it can be an opportunity to start a new and positive direction.

Best wishes to you in making it the latter, and dealing with the former.

helpfully,
Bright

4. I'll add de-cluttering to your excellent suggestions
Not only will it make life more tidy & comfortable, it gives something concrete to do, and a feeling of accomplishment

and you may find stuff you don;t need or want anymore and might be able to sell for a bit of extra money.

It also helps if somewhere down the line a move to smaller digs is necessary.... having less stuff to haul around , makes a move for a new job or to save money a lot easier

11. I've been in a constant state of doing that. Frees up the mind and spirit for more energy and new
ideas, even for unknown ways to allow money to come to you.

12. Already there. Sorta
We were thinking that with an extra bedroom, it might be time to find a boarder. But that means we have to stop using that room as an oversize storage closet.

Plus its been a while since I did the Craigslist sale thing. I used to be a master of that and Ebay. Now, my skills are rusty.

Hope not to lose this place. I think that would be indicative of utter disaster for us. We bought after the market dropped. Which means that our housing costs are actually less than most rentals in the area. Its within about $40 a month of the extreme low end studio apartment rent prices. Plus, with the continuing drop, even though we paid well under 50% of what our neighbors paid, for equity we are about 0, even with having made extra payments.

14. yeah i have to admit it i love selling and swapping!!!
Edited on Mon Jul-25-11 07:22 PM by pitohui
you would know if you had anything gold to sell but keep in mind at $40 an ounce silver becomes worth selling to, check out your attic, i just found four figures in there and i've been un/self employed for a LOT of years

if you find buy and sell depressing, don't do it, but if you enjoy it, and i admit i do, in your free time you can set up a whole cycle of freecycle, trashpicking, fixing stuff up, re-selling, swapping...and i also give back some free stuff too but if you need to get a sale or swap out of your items right now make no apologies for it -- i'm not much of a salesperson but i love making the FIND and i get stuff so cheaply/know so many tricks for repair/fix-up that it doesn't matter that i don't get top price when i sell, it's all in the game

on edit--yah, some of the people are unrealistic, you need to keep the place you have, it costs too much to move and going from owning to renting is soooo expensive, people who i guess have either never rented or never owned don't seem to realize that landlords are in it for a profit and that it costs more to rent...

23. Best. Advice. Ever.
I cannot recommend SoCalDem's post any higher. I did just that back in June and early July. I threw out 15 boxes and probably 12 garbage bags of clutter, and man, has it ever made a difference.

I am more organized, neat, and I can get to things. It has given a level of self confidence.

9. Heh
Library here is BUSY. I doubt getting to know staff is in the cards. But I did go there.. Losing track of time. It must have been Friday.

Books... I have 2 shelves double thick with books in my "to read" column. Some years ago I got annoyed with re-reading books, and actually made 2 lists (the to read, and the read). Ive still got a page of books I need, many parts of series that I want to finish obtaining before I start reading.

At the library, 3 of the 4 books obtained were cook books, We just rode to the store and bought a number of spicings and items for new recipes. The last one was on urban gardening.

Just rode several miles, and still sore from what may have been the longest bike ride of my life to date. A walk is out for the day.

What I want to do with my life: What I was doing, only with 32 million in the bank, and not having to charge anyone.

I cant think of anyone who would want to hear from me who has not already heard from me.

Right now I am hatching plots. If I had some spare cash, even a mere 200k, and a free lawyer to check a few details by, I have a brilliant idea. But c'est la vie.

3. Get a bottle of Jamesons, a pack of Camels and a Netflix account
Drink yourself silly, smoke the whole pack and watch movies that make you cry

Well that's how I spent my unemployed days

7. 1 fer 3
That one is not going to work for me. I don't smoke, and dont drink. But I do have netflix. Ive kinda been looking at this as my chance to actually get through my queue(what an odd word, by the way).

Nothing cry worthy though. So far the old Xmen cartoon seems to be coming up a lot. And maybe I can finally finish off Farscape.

5. Look for work, of course, but also enjoy the time off.
I have worked 6-7 days per week for decades. I was laid off in April and am now gearing up for a new job, but in the interim I have slept in late, taken day trips, watched great movies in the middle of the day, and basically taken every advantage of the time off.

8. I am hoping to avoid that
I do not have anywhere near the resources to last that long.

theoretically I am well qualified for a lot of jobs open in the area. I have a couple connections that might pay off if I am willing to mine them hard and long. Or maybe I will luck onto something. But you never know, as you are finding the hard way.

10. Update your resume? Read the classified ads?
Look online at the job offerings? Network? Check out classes at the nearest college?

13. That comes next
Very practical, but I need a few moments to breath. 1 week ago, I had a future with my company, I was in line to become a small part owner. Now I am out on my arse, don't let the door hit ya.

Resume's start going in next Monday. I hate networking, but that will happen as well. If nothing else, hopefully I can get a minimum wage job to keep the basic bills paid.

Classes cost money, which for hopefully obvious reasons, I am trying to be very stingy with at the moment.
