I live in ________, and the nick name for the state police is ______
I live in New York, and we call them "troopers", as in "the troopers were stopping speeders on the Thruway."

What's the nick name in your state?

5. That's what got me going. After hearing the reference at a movie set in MA,
my kids were calling the NYS police "staties" and I had to explain to them that they were using the wrong term. Here, they're troopers. I'm curious as to what other regional terms might be.

20. I have never heard them called that in PA.
State Troopers or "Smokey" (because of their hats) are the only ones I have heard.

Highway Patrol. HP, in general, has the more polite officers to be stopped by (let off with verbal warning).

the nicer the CHP officers tend to be. Same for Sheriff's deputies, really...

I would say "Highway Patrol" but I think that is their official name under DPS - Department of Public Safety.

16. I'm curious about what people call them in casual conversation-
I expect it varies either state by state or regionally like the pattern of the pop/soda/coke divide.
