52. That was my dream job - I did it and am now retired
Because of years of accumulated physical damage. It was fun while it lasted!

I only ever wanted to take care of horses. As for compensation, we always ask people, "Do you want to make a small fortune with horses?"

When they say. "YES!"

Our answer is, "Start with a large fortune."

Horses are amazing but, wow, I realized when I was about 16 that I had had several close calls that could have resulted in serious injury (like head or spine injuries) or even death. I lost my nerve around them. I admire people who can stay with it.

59. I was an equine mono-maniac but accident prone
But for me owning horses is like being in an abusive relationship.

I got my first horse at thirteen. Two weeks after getting her, she fell with me and I was knocked out for at least forty five minutes. My second horse literally ran over me - I had hoof prints on my back and still have a knot in one shoulder blade.

It's a wonder I made it to be an adult, but the accidents just kept happening though I worked hard at being safe around horses. Now my knees, shoulders and back are shot and I just can't do the work anymore. I still have a few mares and we had one foal this year. I need to get some new pics of him, but here he was, Jan 12, 2011, brand new:

71. Aww, what an adorable foal.
But, yeah, horses = injury. I guess it's just that they're so big and powerful and have a very strong fright/flight instinct. I don't know anyone who spent any significant time around horses who didn't get at least one major injury. My horse spooked and fell over with me on his back. Luckily I fell clear and escaped with just a broken elbow.

Sorry your body is in pain from all those years around horses.

72. My grandpa
had played semi-pro ball and played in the minor leagues. We moved next door when I was about four and I became his little shadow. And, among other things he taught me how to pitch. I can remember as a little kid reading ass sorts of books about baseball - and being able to rattle off lots of baseball statistics.

Of course back then girls were not allowed to play baseball. So I played softball - catcher, shortstop, third base mostly. I was the only girl on the team who could stand at the back of centerfield and throw a ball and hit the center of homeplate.

I was recruited to play at some small colleges but my vision impairment was a major detriment and then I tore the ligaments in an ankle. Happened at a very inopportune time and took a long time to heal. By the time I was able to play again I was in college at a school that didn't even have intramural softball.

39. Also a veterinarian.
I enjoy the science behind it, and love animals. But, my weak stomach doesn't tolerate funky smells, gory sights, so that wasn't meant to be. A vet that throws up at the first hint of trouble probably wouldn't fly -- I never would have made the first few days of vet school.

So, I sit at a desk and push papers now. Boring, but at least I've never encountered anything that made me throw up.

79. Cake batter mixing submarine operator
or maybe continuous flow batter prep operator. I half remember some scheme to produce an endless stream of batter for production line baking.

80. A teacher or an author
(as a university teacher and researcher, I am in a sense both, though neither exactly in the sense that I meant.)

When I was a bit older, I wanted to become a doctor who would discover the cure for cancer. I am definitely not that.

I knew someone who, at that age, wanted to be a mermaid.

83. At age eight, I wanted to be a genius.
I never did figure out how that would be a career path: I just wanted people to listen to me.

Which, if true now, would mean I'd be spending a lot of my time learning to speak Russian.

88. I would be both
Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty.

That was my goal at that age. I was going to be the supercop, but secretly also the supervillain. Seemed ideal. Built in Job security.

96. Adventurer
I'm still trying, but try as I might I just can't figure out how to monetize that shizzle. I've reached the compromise of putting on my business card.

No lie, I wanted to be Haji. Nevermind that I was a Scotch-Lebanese kid from CT who looked like Jonny and whose circumstances in life were those of the WASPy, white, Republican, tennis-club gentry. I wanted to be a small globetrotting adventuring Indian boy.

Sound engineer, chemist, and social revolutionary.

No wonder my parents had a hard time understanding me.
