http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumis

I read an article once that talked about alcoholism in Russia and how it was based on the descendants of Khengis Khan (a huge part of the Russian population now) used to drink fermented milk instead of fermented grains or fruits. So these decendants didn't have the enzymes to process grain alcohol but could process the alcohol in fermented milk which is a traditional drink in Asia.

What does it taste like? Can you get it in North America?

1. Shoot - if you'd asked this a few weeks ago I could have gotten
Some mare's milk and tried fermenting it! But now the colt is weaned and the mare has dried up. Remind me next spring and after the foals are born I can try it out!

I have tasted mare's milk. We've had situations where we had to milk the mare and bottle feed the foals for a few days, so it was just kind of neat to try it. It has a different balance of fats and sugars than cow's milk, though I suspect much of the flavor difference in my testing was from drinking warm unpasteurized milk. And there is a huge difference in the milk in the first few days after the foal is born and the later milk - the colostrum, or early milk, is richer in fats and has more immune system boosting stuff in it.

2. You are so lucky to live on a farm. There was a time when I wanted a hobby farm.

6. I can't try it because I can't drink. But I had a thought. A different enzyme alcohol may
make it less of an issue for people who were born with instantaneous violent alcoholism to grain and fruit alcohol. I've been curious about this for years after reading that article on Russia. I should look into it more. Just a thought.
