What obscure "finds" have you gotten through the internet that never would have been possible before
the online world existed?

I once was into sewing bathing suits. I found a few back issues of "Threads" magazine that had articles on how to sew swimsuits. These back issues were from even before the internet was invented.

1. Threads, huh?
I must have over ten years' worth of issues. To me, that magazine is like an ongoing class...always helpful information and inspiration.

2. I liked it. But am now out of my sewing phase. The stretch stitch I had
on my machine actually was more like a perforated "tear here" line than a stitch it turned out. I made several suits to practice, I made a few for other people. I tried one of my swimsuits on one day and it tore right along the seam the first time I stretched out. Shows you how much I know about stiches and machines. So I quit in that moment. But I got a lot of enjoyment out of putting material and colours together in various styles. The colours in swimsuit material are so vibrant. To this day I enjoy color a great deal. I think it is as a result of a colour theory course I took long ago, too. But I have no talent when it comes to detailed sewing (which is why I was sewing swimsuits and not something else that you had to be precise with). I'm not artistic. I just like color and design.

7. All kinds of Pink Panther stuff - my wife loves the Pink Panther.
I got her a bunch of tank tops (okay, maybe those were for me), a cake pan (made a strawberry cake with pink icing for her birthday that year), original animation cells, fabric, a lamp, all kinds of stuff.

My youngest daughter (16) is Wiccan and I found hand-made pentagram ear rings as well as a wooden chest with a metal pentagram on the top. Those aren't going to be easy things to find in a store.

8. beer candy
I found a small company that makes chocolate with beer. I ordered a box and it came with lager chocolate, IPA chocolate, etc. It had a bit of an after taste, but all in all, it was decent and you could definitely taste the beer. I wish I could remember the name of the company though.

10. A long out of print WWII-era GI book for my dad
When he was in the service during WWII, they used to give the soldiers these cheap paperbacks to read. My dad raved for years about this sci-fi book he read. He claimed it was one of the best books he ever read. So for Father's Day a couple years ago, I tracked down a copy of it for him. It was a GI press book--similar to the one he originally read. He was pretty excited.

11. Most recently,
a news article about my 8th great-grandfather’s trunk that washed ashore when the ship on which he and his family came to New England in 1635 sank during a hurricane. The trunk is now on display at Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site in New Harbor, Maine.

Article link: http://bangordailynews.com/2011/06/23/living/trunk-that-survived-1635-shipwreck-on-display-at-colonial-pemaquid/

Had it not been for the internets, I’d never had known anything about any of my paternal ancestors – not even their names. And I'd never have seen this article.

I heart the internets. It has helped me explore my roots and has also put me in touch with cousins I didn’t know I had – including those on my birth mother’s side.

When people say there isn't any good music anymore, I tell them they're not looking hard enough. That's why I started my music blog:http://markdmusicmemo.blogspot.com

15. One of the single best shows I've ever been to...

Was in 2003 - Opeth was promoting their all-acoustic album Damnation and did a double headlining tour with their then-producer Steve Wilson and his band Porcupine Tree - both sets were totally mind blowing. I wouldve never known about either band if not for the Internet. And yeah I totally agree - if you say there's no good music you're not looking.

22. No. I have thought about it, but I haven't. I signed up for their message boards,
but $20 a month is a lot. I have access through the library to most of the census information through 1930, and the LDS free genealogy site has a lot of information also.

19. Another one: my computer
I got into custom PC building thanks to reading sites like Tom's Hardware, Newegg, and Maximum PC... who needs Apple's controlled environments when you can have 1,000 watt power supplies, six core CPUs, and triple SLI video cards?
