To other staff of black kittehs:
Have you noticed that when your kitteh is basking in bright sunlight, you can see "shadow stripes" in their coats? I think it's cool. :)

1. Proves that all kittehs are tabbies underneath.
The ur-kitteh was a tabby (Felis sylvestris lybica).

2. My Inky is all black with 3 white hairs on her chest. Don't get direct sunlight here.

3. cats have agouti hairs that change color along the hair shaft....
Even when the color change is subtle, it's still there, as in Siamese points. Sometimes you can see it in the right light, or depending on the intensity of color differences along the hair shaft, in any light. That latter is usually what we interpret as tabby colored. But in any event, the layering of adjacent hairs with color shifts along their shafts creates the underlying stripes.

4. I see the spots and stripes
But I also notice that when the sun filters through the translucence, black kitty hair becomes dark reddish brown.

5. Indeed she does!
She's also turning dark red in bright sunlight, just like her papa did before her. He was blacker than night (she's even blacker), but one of his nicknames was Big Red for exactly that reason - plus he really liked dust baths.
