I hated the picture, and I still do.

As a Christian, I was offended that some idiot brought this thing to the Terri Schiavo "protest." I hated that people who called themselves Christians were interfering in the whole situation, and that DU members were laughing at the picture.

64. Oh puhleeese
What utter nonsense. You should be blaming God for being so ruthless as to insist that his son die for the so-called sins of human beings (the concept is obscene at best). Moreover, I find the entire Old Testament horrific and unbecoming to any god who claims self righteousness. I find religion exceedingly offensive and all the photograph did for me was to highlight exactly why I can't subscribe to such nonsense--sadistic nonsense at that.

84. We don't really know if Jesus Christ even existed.
For all practical purposes, Jesus Christ is a fictional character. He hasn't written anything we are aware of, and the stories about him are supernatural in nature. We don't even know if the authors of the Christian Holy Bible even meant for the stories to be taken literally. I don't know any Christian who takes every story in the New Testament literally.

Banning members for making a light joke about a fictional character seems extreme to me. Some Christians in this thread seem to think the OP is funny.

On a side note; here is a lecture given by a liberal Christian you may enjoy. I am not a Christian, but I still found this lecture very interesting. In this video, Karen Armstrong uses stories from various faiths to help explain her own Christian faith. The video is from a liberal Christian perspective. I hope you enjoy it.

Dude, when your rapture comes, good riddance. I'm sorry if that offends you-- really, I am-- but your beliefs offend me, so I guess that makes us just about even. Christianity is a plague upon humanity. Don't worry though-- I'm an equal opportunity "bigot." Judaism, Islam, Hinduism-- basically any "faith" in invisible friends, supernatural causes, magic, whatever. They're all irrational and delusional.

Alert away if your skin is that thin. Note to the mods-- the DUer calls disagreement with his/her religious insanity "bigotry." I responded. I am an atheist-- and a proud one-- not a "bigot."

44. Nobody is saying Christians are oppressed.
What we're saying is it seems to be fair game to say whatever the hell you want to say, offensive or otherwise, with regard to Christians. Just bear in mind that many Christians became LIBERALS because they took the teachings of Jesus seriously. And many of them are dedicated Democrats. All they ask is a little common courtesy -- which is pretty uncommon around here of late.

So why do you want to go out of your way to offend them?

If most any of those things were said about Muslims, a lot of people would be up in arms. If anything at all is said about GLBT, somebody gets (and in fact GOT) tombstoned.

Being an atheist is not necessarily a mark of intelligence or grace.

48. Well, OK then.
I'm not sure if you're responding to me directly or making comments about the DU community at large. But assuming the former, I have some thoughts in response.

"Nobody is saying Christians are oppressed."

Supply Side Jesus directly mentioned oppression in post 27 and alluded to the same in post 4. Read upthread.

"So why do you want to go out of your way to offend them?"

I challenge you to show me where I have "gone out of my way" to offend any Christians in this thread. In fact, I actually try to go out of my way to deliberately not be offensive to anyone of faith. We all have our own unique views regarding religion, however all people of various faiths and non-faiths are deserving of the same respect. I haven't always held this perspective, but I do believe this is the way it should be. On this, I doubt we disagree.

"If anything at all is said about GLBT, somebody gets (and in fact GOT) tombstoned."

On this you could not be more wrong. There have been in the past (and currently still exist, albeit to a lesser degree) a large number of DUers that posted the most vile and hateful messages regarding the GLBT community and were allowed (with tacit approval of the administration of this site) to do so for a very long time with impunity. Although MFM was recently tombstoned, don't make the assumption that all those who make homophobic remarks (in jest or otherwise) are swiftly met with the ban hammer. They aren't.

50. Flip forward.
The sullen, tempermental hero in the second volume might seem a big familiar. The fatherless boy who grows up in the sticks, leaves home and meets some weirdos who travel with him, learns a few tricks, and then saves the world from his father?

51. Technically, Skywalker didn't save anyone from his father.
If not for a bunch of teddy bears on some remote hell named Endor and Poppa Skywalker getting tazed in epic fashion by the Emperor, who know what would have happened.

And you call yourself a sci-fi geek. It's cuz you concentrate on that Trek shit and forget the mastery of the Trilogy. Yes, I said Trilogy. Anything alleged to have been pre-Star Wars is just crap.

Star Trek Enterprise, not the REAL Enterprise.

Trekkers and Star Wars fans? And here, after watching that movie..

I thought it was all one big joke!

60. Saying that's a battle
is like saying there's a battle between Winnie the Pooh and Godzilla. And I'm not really a Star Wars fan, I just recognize that for 3 movies, there was a good bit of cinema at the time. Besides, that Trek poster is highly suspicious. I hear she has a Frodo/Spock 2012 bumper sticker.

89. The concept of forgiveness is the excuse Christians use to do whatever the hell they want.
They can be ax-murderers but they are "forgiven".

92. Sometimes. But it's not the Christianity that makes those who do it do it.
I'm not a Christian myself but I do believe that forgiveness, real forgiveness, sets free the one who forgives.
