Who watches Project Runway?
I just watched the bird show and I have one question: the hems, I don't get the hems. Both Josh and Anya's hems seemed to be draped inward. How do you get this effect, and is this the new trend? Are people actually wearing dresses with this effect?

2. Not sure
I have thought it was a quickie method to do a hem but have no idea how they did it. Some of the sewing is not stellar but with two days to do two outfits that is understandable.
I wish Josh would go - he is so rude and always trying to bring others down.

5. Not sure what to think about Josh.
But I do know that the final decision will be based on talent, not personality. Many of the most snooty designers in past shows have made it to the end.

If he doesn't show that he's learned how to edit by the next challenge, he will be out. All four of them are capable of coming up with a great line.

But of the four, I would like to see:

Anya, Kimberly and Victor--in that order.

7. Did you see the After the Runway show?
It was a discussion with the designers about the last episode of PR. Toward the end Laura Bennett from Season 3 came on and called out Josh on all his behavior, and Josh didn't like it at all. He even played the age card on her. While the credits were rolling he got up and walked off the stage.

He is one of the more obnoxious designers the show has ever had, but the talent is still there.

About the hem -- with all the extra footage the show now airs, I think it would be nice to show more of the sewing/design process.

10. Good idea with showing more of the sewing/design process.
Laura Bennett wasn't exactly a peach in her time. I didn't read the blog, but I'm sure she's taking liberties. I think Josh knew that she was jabbing him to get a rise out of him for the entertainment value. But if he knew, he shouldn't have fallen for it.

Of course, that's easy for me to say. I'm not up there every week trying to do my best when I know I haven't paid the rent in months.

14. I read the blog, and it's typical Laura
That said, everything she wrote is valid. And Josh needs to remember that no matter how bad his situation is, it won't improve by treating others harshly. He needs to grow up.

15. They do say that part of designing is getting along and learning to work together.
You know, I think that's why Olivier Green didn't make it. As interesting as his clothes were, there was something about him that gradually got worse with every week. Until finally, by the time he left, you almost didn't mind. I don't even remember Tim telling him that it was time to pack up his things and go. Did they skip that part because he lost it?

13. Yes - when Josh
turned on Laura is was obvious his angst does not come from the competition but is his way of dealing with people - brutal attacks. He has a deep mean streak.

I agree about more sewing/design process. They seem to focus on personalities but I guess that is reality TV.

18. Josh is so young
he doesn't know how young he is.

On the 70s challenge, even though they all had pictures of 70s fashion available, Josh just didn't have a clue, yet he acts like he's the most gifted designer of a generation. He has some talent, but until he dials the ego back about 5 notches and gets a little more grounding in theory, he's going to be an also-ran.

I've heard it put forth that the reason he was so pissed at Bert is that he knows that he's going to BE Bert in 30 years... if he's lucky.

24. I love Bert.
Yeah, he could grate at times, but the man knew his fashion. He also wasn't going to put up with the bullcrap out of the young-uns either, and for that I salute him.

One thing that is really telling from season to season is the lack of fashion history a lot of these young designers have. Even if you're self-taught, it's a good thing to know from where you came so you know where you are going.

Josh has an ego that extends far and wide. Nothing wrong with that per se, but he does need to learn when to turn it off or tone it down. That said, I won't be surprised to see him in Fashion Week.

27. Bert definitely had the best personality arc so far.
Yeah, he knew his history. But in the end, I think he respected the other's talent, and in return, was respected. Over vice-versa. Don't know how it happened. But I was glad to see that it did.

3. Funny thing was, I thought for sure that Josh's dress would be scored at the bottom.
I'm guessing about how that type of hem is made: On the underside, the hem is gathered by handstitching & the fabric pulled to create the puffiness. Didn't look good to me; maybe I'd like it if it's done more neatly.

6. Must be, but I love Anya's work. She's my favorite.
I feel so badly that before the season had begun & I had looked at all the audition videos, I had predicted she wouldn't last long because she had learned to sew only 3 weeks before her audition. I couldn't have been more wrong; she's a natural.

8. The episode where she lost her money cinched it for me.
Amazing to recover from such a handicap as that to win.

But I think it will be a problem if she keeps having to rip seams to get her model in and out of her dress.

9. She only has to go one more round.
Besides, Victor cinched it. The judges are balancing her talent with her lack of experience. In the end, I think they'll go for, whoever they want to see more of--which is why I know Anya will make it through, unless she really screws up in the next round.

The one thing that many forget, (and which Victor should remember), is that the clothes need to be remanufactured. That means, the more complicated and detailed, the more cost to reproduce it for resell. I think that's why Anya keeps winning, and why Kimberly outfoxed Victor in that last challenge.

I can forgive that more than those who have used hot glue guns in order to finish on time -- especially the one (I forgot which one) who did it while the model was WEARING the outfit! :)

I don't know anything about fashion, and can never tell what the judges are going to like and not like.

My sister-in-law got my wife and I hooked on this show...damn her!!

It is fun to watch, and we love Tim Gunn.

17. Fashion oh fashion
I have seen so many surprising fashion trends lately especially those from top designers so its not actually a big surpirse that i see a lot of fashion forward trend on project runway. Sometimes i think that it is just how one carries what he wears no matter how wierd or mismatched it may seem. I am a fashion-savvy myself and i have been used to those weird looking stuff though i try to stick to something i can be confident wearing so i stick with the ones i am more familiar with. Its just a matter of being confident with what your wearing and exude that personality and no matter what it is your actually wearing it will surely shine!

19. Welcome to DU
I get Project Runway's fashion. But somethings go right over my head in other areas. For example, the main character from Sex in the City. I saw her for the very first time in one of the movies and what she was wearing completely befuddled me. I thought, hell, a 12 year old could pull that out from the bottom of her closet.

So, I guess it does have to do with confidence.

20. A balloon hem --
Edited on Mon Oct-10-11 11:53 AM by Hell Hath No Fury
I have a cocktail dress from the late 50's that has what was called a balloon hell -- it is essentially the same type of thing. The old way of doing it was to have the dress hem sewn onto another piece of fabric thatisi then pulled up under the dress and attached (usually to the waistband) creating an edgless hem. I have recently noticed a return to that old trend.

On edit: they are now calling them "bubble" dresses:

Here is a vintage dress with a balloon hem:

23. Hems - new trend
I guess, now. Happen to walk by a bridal shop and their short dresses were showing those hems.
I remember putting in soft hems just by not pressing it but this appears to be something different. I cannot see any hem stitch marks at all. I am thinking the only way it could be done is to use a shorter lining and then not press the hem.
Whatever it is, it brings too much attention to the hem which is not where the attention shoud go - IMHO.

32. Making clothes for normal women is much harder
Every model is about the same size. They just need some tailoring to make the clothes fit.

But a 125 lb five foot four woman comes in many shapes. Some are busty, some have big arms, some have wide hips, different waist etc. In that sense it is harder to make clothes for non-models.
