1. Exercise? See if you can cut back on the meds?
You have to weigh the benefits against the numbed out feelings. If you have panic attacks or extreme emotions that make you make bad decisions or it's hard to be in your own skin, then maybe the numbness isn't so bad. But talk to your MD, maybe you are taking too much.

4. Have you considered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
I don't know what you have tried, but some success in treating PTSD has been demonstrated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The treatment is designed to train your mind to control your emotions. The therapy reminds me of Buddhist teachings, you practice methods to help you stay in and deal with in the present. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy

This can help you to decrease the use of medications.

5. I was treated with something
Edited on Sun Oct-16-11 11:28 AM by MrsBrady
called EMDR....and it worked for me.

Make sure to get someone that is part of a profesional group, and certified to do this.

I had this done, along with a cognitive approach and it worked for me.

I saw an actual psychiatrist, who practiced therapy...not all do. Had her own private practice.

It's almost a miracle. I'm not saying you don't have to deal with 'stuff', because you do.
However, I don't have the problems I used to. It did wonders for me.
She also taught me how to avoid re-injuring myself.

I was having dissociative symtoms that began to manifest themselves after a traumatic event when was 27.
I had had multiple traumas from childhood through my early twenties that had never bothered me, and I thought
I had dealt with everything...when I hadn't really dealt with anything at all.

This did wonders for me.
I still had much personal recovery to do after EMDR treatment, but the food aversions due to trauma (I had
certain foods I could not even eat at all), the waking up in the middle of the night thinking there was someone
standing over me or staring at me, that people were hiding in my closets, the having to sleep with lights on when I was alone...
I was beginning to develop a fear of large crowds/crowded rooms/tight places....
It all went away.

She had wanted to give me an anti-anxiety medication, but I didn't want to take anything.
After we did the EMDR and I put myself into al-anon and did the steps (worked the program), my anxiety went away
and I didn't need medication.

6. So glad you found some help
Especially without the use of the meds. One of the problems with the meds, aside from the numbness, is that they cause weight gain, so people are dealing with diabetes as well as the mental stuff. I have heard good things about EMDR. Check your PM.

7. I couldn't eat
macaroni and cheese. I liked both foods, but could not eat them together.

won't say why here....

however, after EMDR, I could eat it.

Now I love it, and like to make it from scratch.

EMDR was pretty amazing.

8. Talk to your doctor
No offense to anyone but you really should not take advice on something like this from people on a message board.
