My daughter had the best response to bigotry I've ever heard.
This was back during Oil War I. She was in a discussion about the war, and her boyfriend made a reference to "ragheads." My daughter said, "Brent, you're an educated person. You should know better than to talk like that."

It squarely addressed the inappropriateness of the reference, but, by building him up (flattering his intellect) it did not put him on the defensive.

I'm bringing this up because I recently found out that one of my Republican friends is also homophobic. I was shocked, because he seems intelligent and rational and kind-hearted in most respects. But I showed my shock and contempt, and he just got defensive. I wish I had remembered my daughter's reaction.

1. That makes a lot of sense.
You're far more apt to catch flies with honey than with vinegar, as my grandparents used to say and as my mother still says, and that's especially true as far as politics, race, etc., are concerned. And it's something we should remember during this election season, as well, as we try to get as many people as possible to go our way.

3. It's a good response
Unfortunately, the people who say such awful bigotted things around me are members of my husband's family, who sadly, aren't educated, and don't seem to know better. Argh.

7. If they're not educated, how about something like
"I know you're a hardworking, law-abiding citizen with a heart of gold, and it hurts me to hear you talking like that about people you don't even know."

5. Tha apple doesn't fall far from the tree...
You obviously have done well bringing up a considerate and intelligent daughter. If only more parents took their job as seriously.

6. Good job!
I run into freepers in real life, and I've found that the worse thing to do to them is make them think.

Ran into a female freeper this past weekend at one of my favorite watering holes. This was late in the night and she had a few.

A selective history lesson of the Irish in the 1800's went to those "negroes" (word mine) have nothing to complain about cause they just bring the country down. (did I mention that this was late night?) Standard freeper rant. Her boyfriend/date had his head down and the "there she goes again" look on his face. Standard logic wasn't getting thru' a pickled brain, so I turned my back and walked. Wouldn't have preferred

This wasn't the first freeper, and it won't be the last. Thanx for the oppotunity to vent.
