What's you opinion of the Ikea store and furniture?
For some reason I have a memory that their was something wrong with them. I've only been to their store once and got lost. It's made in a way that directs you one way, to visit the entire store, when you just need a shower curtain. I didn't like the fact that every thing was made out of plastic. It felt cheap.

1. You CAN go in the back way
I lived near the 1st American IKEA store for many years, and found that it's just easier to go in the OUT door if you want to buy the small things that IKEA is great for: lamps, picture frames, drinking glasses, planters, etc., which they put at the end of the maze near the cash registers.

Their cafeteria food isn't bad, either.

I'm not a fan of all their stuff (frequently particleboard) but I had an amazing glass desk at work once that was from IKEA, so you can find some interesting pieces there.

2. It's not bad starting-out furniture, And it tends to be to Euro scale.
Good for small apartments. I go a little berserk in the store too, though, trying to find my way around. I think if you have the money you are better off with real wood and better quality but it's got its uses.

3. I haven't been in one in so long not sure what decade that
was...1980s maybe? There was one in a mall near my home, and we'd look in the window as we walked by. The word I would use
to describe the furniture is 'cold'. Hard, uninviting, plain, not comfy, sort of indoor bus stop look.

I thought it odd that furniture from a country that is so cold wouldn't be more inviting and warm looking.

4. I mostly shop the market there. Don't need any more furnishings.
Lots of their stuff is wood and/or particle board, not all plastic. I have a few bookcases and a desk from there, not much else. But its the closest place in LA for me to get my Swedish goodies.

bought a bunch of wooden furniture there years ago: tables, small sofa, bookshelves
none of it very expensive

the bookshelves were cheap, which is why i bought them: i had lots of books and not a lot of spare cash after buying all my books

the tables were soft pine; i immediately waxed them with bowling alley wax

i still have it all

6. When I first got out on my own in the early 80's I spent a lot more $ for a lot crappier stuff.
Edited on Sat Nov-05-11 11:15 AM by Gidney N Cloyd
The stuff back then in a fresh college grad's budget range was absolute shit-- particle board so cheap it would swell up on a humid day, unfinished for painting or laminated with something just a hair better than kitchen shelf paper. Ikea would have been a godsend.

8. I think it's pretty good stuff for the price
The maze is annoying, but having traversed it once, I can usually get to where I'm heading pretty quickly. And, you can't beat the meatballs. I wish I had one closer.

9. Love it!
Even if I don't buy a thing, it's a delight to walk through and look at everything. I actually find the arrows on the floor helpful, but there are also shortcuts you can use between sections if you know your way around a little.
