Poll question: What do you find most important when listening to music?
I usually find the sound/arrangements most important. Vocals are often important, too. I'm not one who focuses a lot on lyrics. If they strike me as really bad, really good, or bizarre, that factors into my opinion. I focus most on lyrics in regards to country music.

1. Lyrics, absolutely
Eminem may have talent at rapping, but I'm not gonna listen to a song about "his bitches." Lyrics are the soul of the song.

2. If a song sounds good (meaning it's arranged well) I will listen.
But if the lyrics are just inane or stupid, that will distract me.

4. I rarely listen to the lyric of a song

and I'm not fond of jazz vocals--except for a few of the great female vocalists. When I listen to a song, I listen to the music overall.

5. A good melody...
...accompanied by a half decent-arrangement is what makes a song appeal to me.

For me the two need to be in tandem and are not mutually exclusive. If a song or piece of music has a good melody with a bad arrangement, or good arrangement with a bad/mundane melody, I lose interest.

Good lyrics take the song into another realm of excellence, but not necessary to make me listen and enjoy somewhat.

7. I agree

Lyrics sometimes speak to me and often affect me. They can make an album better, like with Rachel Farris's album Soak. But a good power pop song with nonsense lyrics would be fine for me personally. :-)

8. sing-a-bility
I like a song I can sing to.... so it should be in my range. If I can relate the lyrics to something in my life, so much more the better.

10. Big Picture For Me
Words, music, performances, crafting of the arrangement, quality of the production, etc.

Also,
- does the production fit the mood of the lyrics?
- does the music fit the mood of the lyrics?
- is the sound transparent so i can hear all the parts?

I've never been one to listen to lyrics only. They could brilliant lyrics, but if the rest of the craft isn't as polished, i won't like the song. (Not to say i like nothing trashy, but one can tell when the trashiness is intentional and meant to evoke something consistent with the words. Something like Love For Sale by Talking Heads.)

12. Everything.
A piece of music is a work of art. I don't see the lyrics separately from the melody, separately from the intrumentation, any of it.

It all adds up to one thing, just as the blue and red oils add up to the same painting.
