Poll question: Which swear word is the worst? (In code for sensitive eyes)
Which one is so bad that when you hear it you are shocked? Which one is so bad, even you never say it? Which is the queen mother of all dirty words?

I am leaving room for suggestions. Please no compound usage.
Mother f***er is not an option.
C**ksucker isn't either.

1. None
I don't find any swear words to be offensive or shocking, only sometimes inappropriate.

2. I can't say #2 in America, though it doesn't shock me
So I guess #2, though I am more appalled by racial epithets.

7. Parts of Britain
Edited on Tue Apr-06-04 04:04 PM by Fenris
Ask Screaming Lord Byron or Big McLargeHuge about that. It doesn't have the same connotation there. Mostly used between men toward each other.

EDITED to include Scotland.

17. In France
people use 'con' all the time, especially to mean 'a blockhead'... however, it is considered offensive.

3. I vote the C word...
I use S**t and F**k all the time. I use them so much that, unfortunately, my three year old drops an S bomb now and then.

But the C word... Man that one is harsh. That is a fighting word. If somebody called me that, I'd have my gorilla of a husband rip them in two rather large sticky pieces.

10. I mean
The S word SH*T.
I don't know what you mean.
Is there another S word that starts with S and ends with T?
I think SNOT is probably not that bad.

22. It's not offensive on TV but
if someone calls a friend or relative that in real life, you are likely to be offended.

It is the meaning and intent that is more offensive than the word itself.

8. Jon Stewart's Use of the C Word
To refer to Tyco Juror # 4 (a/k/a "J-Fo") was about the funniest use of an otherwise offensive word I've ever heard.

9. Sopranos and Osbornes have numbed me to most words
Edited on Tue Apr-06-04 04:05 PM by soothsayer
I myself don't swear too much (I'll say "f" instead of the actual f-word, and I never say the S word cuz it's vulgar). Seems like a failure of imagination, swearing does.

on edit: that left the c word

14. The "C" word by a long shot.
If my kids heard me use the others, I wouldn't feel nearly as bad as if I used that one.

The other two options aren't bad at all depending how you use it. Example; Bad way to say F**K: F**k you!
Good way to say F**K: It's a beatiful f**king day.

Bad way to say s**t(or unpolite way): I have to take a S**t, is that alright with anyone? Because if it isn't I don't give a S**t!

Good way to say s**t: You need to quit taking s**t from your coworker.

Sorry I couldn't come up with better examples but you get the idea right? I don't think there is a good way to say C**T.

23. "Reclaiming C**t" the song from the Vagina Monologues
I know that usually its done with a climax, but at the showing I went to it was done as a hippie folk song. Funniest thing ever was hearing a whole crowd of 70 or so people chanting c**t over and over.

19. You Should Have Added A Choise of "None"
Swearing is either offensive or it's not. So, the words carry the same weight with me.

I know when it's ok to swear like a sailor (no offense Navy guys), and when to curb the expletives. So, any curse in the wrong setting is equally bad. Any curse in the correct setting is equally acceptable.

21. But with use do words gain acceptance?
For example. When I was a kid I wasn't allowed to use the word CRAP. Now, such a word is so innocuous that it makes not impact and is hardly noticed.

I remember that when I was a kid, there was a line in a John Wayne movie that went, "Fill your hands with lead you Son of a Bitch!" or something really close to that. Back then, when it was showed on TV, they bleeped Son of a Bitch. Now when it is shown, no bleep.

Certain words gain legitimacy through common use in popular culture. The reality of what words are acceptable and what words are taboo is a social construct.

Another example. At one time it was fairly common and not at all verboten to call African Americans, Negroes (or worse). Now, in polite company, you really aren't even supposed to call African Americans black.

Acceptable language is a function of changing social mores and standards.

In spite of this, the words I listed, and a few I didn't, are still considered to be unacceptable in most social settings.

So given that... Which of the three I listed do you feel is more taboo than the others?
