It MIGHT be possible if you got one of the random xtra cool customer service reps but I kind of doubt their system will let you. You might try getting the pay-as-you-go data plan, then you would have it if you needed it. Not sure how it all works myself.
And FYI ... wifi is NOT everywhere
Verizon smart phones must have a data plan. My wife upgraded from her droid to a Rhyme and we thought about giving the old droid to our daughter but didn't want to spend another 30 bucks a month extra for the data plan. The phone CAN be used as an mp3/video/game player though - as long as you don;t need the verizon network to do any of them.
And that's all my daughter wanted to do anyway - lol - play Angry Birds.
I haven't tried connecting the droid to our home wifi but I suspect it won't work as the data plan is what contains the part that allows the phone to do all the network stuff. I'll try tonight to see what happens. Even if I can use it as an online device I am, sure it won't allow phone calls. Other than skype.
I am lazy - It's a pretty safe thing to do from what I read but I have just always been leery of rooting/altering all my electronics. lol, my neighbor is a computer maintenance instructor at the local tech school and has offered several times to mod my xbox but I just never do...
I work in IT too and just can't bring myself to alter my stuff that much but I don't think I am quite as bad as one of my co-workers who won't even change the wallpaper on a new computer. If it isn't the default, he doesn't want it. lol
