I get tested quite often (not a partaker myself). I got to know one of the testers and I asked him specifics about what they test. He said they have a set threshold which meets the standard for a positive result. This corresponds to a "user level" which typically denotes regular use. In other words, if you just partake very rarely, your chances of busting a positive are very low. This defeats all those who claim the old 'inhaled 2nd hand smoke during a concert' excuse.

Beware of methods you might find online to beat the test. The testers have seen them all. Where I work, they don't watch you pee, but they do check the temperature immediately when you give them your sample. It has to fall within a certain range or it's rejected. It also can't be too diluted, so if you drink 5 gals of water before the test, they will reject your sample. Also don't adulterate your sample. A former coworker was busted for putting chromium in his pee(something about it throws off the testing). He tried to claim he was taking chromium supplements, but they said if he ingested as much chromium as his sample indicated, he would be dead. The ironic part is if he had just busted a positive, they would have probably just put him in rehab, but since he adulterated his sample, out the door he went.

Alcohol will show up in your blood for a few weeks (liver enzymes) and pot lives on for about a month, at least in the blood. Most benzodiazapines will show traces for at least a week and opiate-based drugs even longer. Call in stoned?

But I've found if you're not a frequent smoker, simply drinking a very large amount of a diuretic like cranberry juice (actual juice, not cocktail if possible) will make you very clean. The worst that can happen if you have totally clear (like water) urine would be that they'd ask you to retest.
