E-mails, calls help Gizmo's owners heal

A nationwide outpouring of anger and sadness hit Nashville yesterday after the slaying of Gizmo, a pet Yorkshire terrier killed when it was kicked like a football.

Jessica McKenzie and Jelani Lewis spent last night trying to respond to more than 600 e-mails from people who had heard about the slaying of their beloved 16-year-old dog.

Dozens of angry readers flooded The Tennessean with e-mails and phone calls from all over the world yesterday, including several callers who offered to give the couple another dog.

''People are telling us how they are pet owners themselves, and how they couldn't imagine something that horrific happening to their animals,'' said McKenzie, 27. ''They are telling us they hope that the guys are punished to the fullest extent of the law, and hoping that they will be getting charged with a law that will stick.''
