Hurray! The ice is "going out".

Ever hear of that? I have, all my life. "The ice is 'going out' it's almost fishing season!" I had always thought that this meant that the ice on this lake just melted as the weather warmed up. But, no, the ice really "goes out". The lake just gets to a point where it swallows the ice and it is gone in a matter of an hour or two. Really amazing! People up here place bets on the hour and the day when the ice will "go out".

And last week the ducks came back. There was only about 6 feet of open water between the shore and the ice, but these clever little ducks found it and now they swim happily along the shore of the lake.

is going out. They removed the ice boom allowing the ice to go down the Niagara River and over the falls on into Lake Ontario.
