Has any one ever had carpal tunnel surgery
I have to decide if surgery is an option for me and I am not sure. Is the problem fixed or is it just a temporary relief?

do you have any idea why you have it?

3. carpal tunnel is caused by a strained shoulder muscle
It manifests in the wrist and hand, but if I had it I'd seek relief through intensive massage and attention to the shoulders before ever going under the knife.

6. I'm a little confused about different forums?
Is this not a question to be in the Lounge or someplace else? Just what exactly is appropriate for GD?

11. I don't think so. General discussion as it pertains to politics?
But regarding your question, I type a lot and I have pain in my thumb area (left hand). It could be carpel tunnel or it could be arthritus because the pain comes and goes.

7. Try exercises
There are good range of motion exercises all over the web, and they work. You just need to remember to do them frequently while you're doing repetitive motions like computer jockeying. Google "carpal tunnel exercise" and that should get you there.

Surgery should always be the last option and exercise the first, since surgery always carries a degree of risk and gentle range of motion exercise does not.

10. Look into your seating too
especially the height of your chair relative to your desk. I'd try all I could try to change before I had surgery.

12. Also make sure it is really your wrists...
I had a back injury then problems with my wrists which was diagnosed as carpel tunnel. But I don't do anything really repetitive and I've noticed when my upper back is bothering me my hands bother me. There is a splint for your wrists you can get to wear at night or even during the day. I'm resisting surgery because I am convinced mine is related to my back.

13. Here is a link to WebMD.com with lots of info.
http://my.webmd.com/hw/arthritis/hw213311.asp

I had had carpal tunnel that was diagnosed by both my family doctor and with tests done by a nerve specialist who said I actually had some nerve damage. I always had problems doing the follow activities (these were just a few).
Holding a book to read.
Washing my hair.
Doing tedious work with my hands (like tying line to a fish hook).
Driving.
Typing.
Using a mouse.
Writing for over a couple minutes.

The symptoms would be pain in my wrist and forearm where your nerves run and my first 3 fingers would also go numb with these activities. Had the surgery about 4 years ago. I have not had one symptom even remotely
like I had before. My symptoms are 100% gone. I could answer more questions for you if you want.

14. I had surgery
About 10 years ago and it's just fine. That said, I would try other treatments first such as exercise, massage therapy and chiropractic. My nephew is a chiropractor and has given my husband quite a bit of relief using the methods I've mentioned.

15. I was just about to post when this was moved from GD to the

Lounge and one thing I was going to say was in regard to the discussion about what belongs in GD. It is GENERAL discussion but if you look at the forum description, it does say general discussion related to politics or political issues. But GD and the Lounge get lots of traffic, so you'll get good responses (usually) in either forum.

I agree with everyone who said get a second opinion, try other things, etc. I will add that my brother had the surgery on both wrists probably ten years ago and has been fine since then. His was definitely an ergonomic injury.

Welcome to DU, schoolteacherpam! :hi: What age kids do you teach and/or what subjects?

16. Get a gel wrist support for you mouse hand
Make sure you are sitting so that your entire forearm is resting on the table.

Go see an acupuncturist - I was skeptical about it, but it really helped me get relief.

17. Surgery is a last resort
I had CPS, and it was treated with traction. By stretching ny wrist, the tendons or ligaments or whatever that were tight were loosened up and my CPS was eliminated. Go to a physiscal therapist and ask them about using traction to treat it
