William Hung - A Serious Discussion
i think i speak for many that this guys 15 minutes were up 16 minutes ago. having said that:

When i see the 'news' anchors mocking him i tend to get really pissed off. I think to myself, this poor bastard is being paraded and laughed at all over the country. he is being exploited.

then i wonder.....

Is Hung really the PLAYER and not the one being PLAYED? I don't watch 'Murican Idol and have only seen his 'debut' after the fact but is it possible that he is a F*CKING GENIUS??? this guy HAD to know he had not one ounce of talent but went on national 'TV' and is now making $$ (yeah, i know he ain't making millions but still) off his geekdome!

Am i right to feel pitty for him or did he play my ass right along with everybody else?

thoughts?

1. Read this
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/archive/2004/04/06/eguillermo.DTL

I made a mention of Hung in a post about the Topic We've Had Enough Of, and I feel like he's my Buckwheat, but I digress.

This editorial clearly feels one way, but there's some quotes from Hung's UC Berkeley engineering professor. Apparently, he really is what you see--just so optimistic that reality escapes him.

20. How do we know that the Berklee Professor isn't really the opportunist?
I mean, here's a student that's all over TV, and where's the Prof? Still stuck teaching classes at Berklee.

I'm just sayin

21. Huh?
The prof's not trying to get on TV, or write an expose about the 'real William Hung.'

And it's the University of California at Berkeley, not the Berklee School of Music.

2. Can anyone be that clueless?
He goes to UC Berkeley. He is not an idiot. I think he tried out as a lark and now is milking it for all it's worth. He makes me laugh. I don't feel sorry for him...he knows what he is doing.

6. Hung is the world's biggest geek.
God bless him

"You hand in your ticket and you go watch the geek
Who immediately walks up to you when he hears you speak
And says "How does it feel to be such a freak?"
And you say "Impossible" as he hands you a bone...."

7. I hate seeing him on shows
If they advertise he is coming on I change the channel. I am so sick of seeing him and hearing about him.

That said, I hope he saps as much $$$ as he can... but wont be any of mine.

If the "they" are exploiting him, well thats his 15 mins and his problem... He is making his choices.. and seems to be doing well for someone who so thoroughly sucks.

9. it's all gone way too far.
At first, I was kinda rooting for the guy because he was so oblivious to how bad he was...and we loved him for it.

But I saw a "news" report on the making of his album and they were sending him for voice lessons.

VOICE LESSONS!! How ridiculous is that?!? The reason people enjoyed him was that he COULDN'T sing well. Teaching him to sing better ruins the whole thing (not that there is much to ruin, but hopefully you get my point).

His 15 minutes are waaaaaay over.

10. Willy has a band now!
Saw a clip somewhere yesterday...backup singers, the whole nine!
I predict that W.Hung will eventually outsell that goofy metal band from the 80's...Faster Pussycat. What better gag gift can there be?
Can't wait for the Britney/Hung tour!!

17. Gonna tell you a story 'bout William Hung
For some unknown reason, Hung struck a cord with viewers of American Idol this season. During the auditions, the producers show footage of horrible singers and milk it for laughs. You know, put someone on the air and say "here's someone the judges hated" and you get the footage of an earnest contestant who just happens to be a horrible singer. The judges make fun of the person and we all get a big laugh out in TV land.

Well, Hung was one of those horrible singers. He did a tone-deaf rendition of a Ricky Martin song ("She Bangs!") and was of course laughed away by the judges.

But Hung had the last laugh and was able to get himself a record deal from his American Idol performance.

He seems like a nice enough kid. He's originally from Hong Kong and is living the American dream.

19. I think he's a genius
Not musically - he sucks - but he knows he's bad, he knows he's doing it as a lark, and he's smart enough to know that America will keep buying and is intelligent enough to milk it. He's also not as cynical as I just made him out to be. He is aware and deliberately getting out of this what he can, while enjoying it. he has said he doesn't sing well but he just really, really loves to sing. And America, right now, is letting him sing.

So, why shouldn't he be singing? I don't blame him.

I'd rather listen to him than some integrity-lacking idiot like Beyonce or Brittney or that donkey-raping cockknocker Clay Aiken or a whole host of others who might sing more in tune but who couldn't give a shit about the fun of singing or the treasure that is music and artistic expression.

Mr. Hung just loves to sing.

I applaud him for what he's doing. Very intelligent, and he knows what he's doing, and has total awareness of his limited abilities.

His "15 minutes" were up 20 years ago.

I will give Bill this much, though...

Bill Hung, I just want to THANK you for providing me with a PERFECT defense when somebody tries to chew my ass or tell me I "have a shitty attitude" because I think I live in the STUPIDEST fucking MORONIC country in the galaxy.

There's NO defense against it. "Oh, I have a shitty attitude? Murkan Sheeple aren't REALLY that fucking stupid? OK, then explain WILLIAM HUNG!!"

They can't do it.

And I have to admit, we all immediately ran out to a nearby car, cranked the stereo, and laughed our asses off in the beautiful spring sunshine.

Sometimes, you just gotta appreciate the little moments.

I think William Hung represents the achievement of the American Dream. It's a sick, twisted, vacant dream, but he's a winner. I'm kinda sweet on the guy, and I hope he makes tons of cheese. :D

ON EDIT: Don't judge, until you've listened to his version of "Hotel California."

OK I admit, I'm kinda hoping he does well just because he is definitely NOT a product of a record co."focus group" that sits around deciding what the listening public should hear...had enough Britney etc, etc, etc ad nauseum...would have preferred he cover Desperado though.

31. I'm only 1/4 Serious
One can't possibly be serious when discussing William Hung, or American Idol in general. :D

At any rate, I'm happy to root for Hung against any of the AI contestants, all stylized and sanitized for our protection.

I'm certain that next season, on American Idol 4, clever contestants will try to perfect their "goofball-let's-make-fun-of-this-idiot" act.

32. I like the guy
He seems genuine. He loves to sing...and he's making money off it. Good for him...Granted I myself wouldn't be spending $ on any album.

Although, regarding this racism angle...I never though of that. It is possible that there are racial overtones...and that he projects a certain Asian stereotype.

...so bad that he's good, y'know? He's bad, he knows he's bad, and he doesn't care! He seems to be having fun with it all, so what the hell? He's more fun to watch than some "tortured artiste" that you think may commit suicide right in the middle of a set!

It's like when people say, "This is the worst show I've ever seen" and I reply "So you're sitting there watching it, right?" (People frequently beat me vigorously around the head and shoulders for being a smartass.)

God bless ya, Will. Play it for all it's worth.
