Poll question: DVD: Widescreen or Fullscreen?
When you watch a DVD movie, do you prefer widescreen or fullscreen?

1. Well said!
Fullscreen is for freepers who think they're getting LESS movie because there's wasted space ont he TV.

I swear, I'm still working on convincing my family that widescreen gives the WHOLE image. (though my family are not freepers, thank God, they're just not totally clued in).

I hate fullscreen. Hate it hate it hate it.

When I'm president, it won't even be legal to sell fullscreen any more.

3. and have you ever seen a widescreen aspect ratio Kinkade?
I DON'T THINK SO!!!

thusly, fullscreen is for fucking hacks, if the Zamfir of the art community doesn't like it, it's gotta be good

4. Here's a funny story about my family
They're not very technically savvy. But, for some reason, they've always had the nicer geek stuff, like huge television sets. So, they finally got their first DVD player a couple of years ago, and I get this frantic call: "Can you come over? There's something wrong with the DVD player?" And I say, "What's wrong?" And my mom said, "There's these BLACK BARS on the screen and we can't get rid of them!" And I had a good laugh and said, "They're supposed to be there!" But they didn't like the black bars. They've finally come around to WS, after much begging on my part because I refused to watch a fullscreen movie with them. What a snob I am!

8. Yep, sounds like my struggle with 'em
a struggle I've been struggling with for twenty years, but especially now that they all have DVD players.

Them: "Why don't they give us the top and bottom of the picture? Why did they cut them off?"

Rabrrrrrr: :nuke: :nuke: :argh:

9. The joke will be on them...
Their next TV will probably be widescreen, and by then they'll have invested in a load of DVDs that will not only have black bars at the sides, but won't show the complete frame.

2. 1st option
Bolstered by the fact that my monitor's aspect ratio is closer to widescreen than fullscreen, so for me wisescreen IS full screen!

5. My laptop's screen is 16:10
Pretty close to standard widescreen aspect ratio.

My screen resolution is 1440x900.

15. What a lovely monitor you have....
But then again I do see the apple logo so it's to be expected that the monitor would not only be functional but attractive as well

WIDESCREEN only!!!!

6. Fullscreen.
The only tv I watch is 19 inches and my couch is 10 feet away. I just see no reason for having widescreen. It may show a fuller picture, or whatever the above posts said in addition to that, but that negates in my viewing experience due to the decreased size of everything.

I really wouldn't care about the whole deal, except most movie rental stores I go to have only "Widescreen Edition" versions of many movies.

10. Uh, Betamax was technically superior to VHS in video quality...
Of course, DVD is better - assuming the people doing the transfer of the show to video do a decent job. Some don't, like Sony/Columbia-Tristar (FYI).

They do a crappy transfer also. They must choose the grainest print after it's run the small town cinema circuit.

17. They are the worst
I have a French one of theirs where they did they transfer off an copy with subtitles so unlike a normal DVD you can't turn the subtitles off.

Widescreen sucks. Oh and I am not a freeper either and I definately don't shop at Wal*Mart, hell I would walk all the way to fucking Phoenix to buy something instead of shopping at Wal*Mart.

...that skooshes the picture down (re-aims the guns) increasing the vertical resolution when I want to watch widescreen movies.

It's outstanding.

19. For a film whore like myself....
it can only be widescreeen presentation.

To watch films like "Pillow Talk" or "Desk Set" on fullscreen is pointless. Entire actors are left out of shots or, even worse, they use scan and pan resulting in camera moves the director never intended.

For years before VHS/DVD I watched "Desk Set" on TV. There's one scene that had Kate & Spence in a hallway talking. As I'd always seen it, Kate did all the talking and the camera stayed on her the entire scene. When I saw it in widescreen for the first time, I saw that Spence was giving an entire performance without words that was the whole POINT of the scene. And for all those years I'd never seen it. What a shame.

Widescreen or death!

20. Yeah, widescreen, but beware the fake widescreen
Yep, some bastards are cropping the pan and scan footage of movies and delivering that as widescreen.

Fraud.
