DVD-R - Very important question. MUST READ
I just read on Best Buy's website...regrading almost all of the DVD players that say DVD-R playback (almost all had this capability)....it said not all DVD-R's can be played back on DVD-R compatible DVD players. Call manufacturer. What!?
Does anyone know anything about this?

Here's my important question....I walk into best buy....I buy normal human DVD-R discs.....I make a copy of my DVD using a normal human DVD copy program (we'll assume its DVD X Copy). How do I know if it will play in my DVD-R compatible DVD player?

1. Some DVD recorders use different formats
All DVD players should read the standard, pre-made discs, but many are incompatible with some of the DVD-R formats in use. Remember Beta vs VHS?

2. Well... Your DVD player's specifications which are included
in the manual let's you know what its playback formats are. Just like CD players. Right? Just guessing here.

3. Answer:
In order to find out if it is compatible with your DVD player you will first open your DVD player and gently place the DVD-R into it. Then you will close the DVD player with the DVD-R in it. Next you press play on the DVD player. If the DVD is played and the video and audio are presented with satisfaction, you will know that the DVD-R is compatible with your DVD player. If the DVD does not play with satisfaction then the DVD-R is not likely compatible with your DVD player. :silly:

9. You need to put that into laymens terms.
Like this:

"To see if your DVD player is compatible with your DVD writer, just take a DVD you've written and try playing it in the DVD player. If all you hear is a lot of cussing, they aren't compatible."

:)

10. Ok, that was flippant. For real, now...
This issue of not-quite-compatibility is something that's still holding back the universal adoptation of DVD-R's today. The best way to ensure compatibility is to get DVD Writers and Players made by the same company, and even THAT isn't a sure bet.

The BEST thing to do is buy your player and/or writer from a place with a decent return policy.

6. Check this out
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers.php (excellent reference site!)

Of course, my model (JVC XV-501BK) is claimed not to be able to play DVD+R discs but can play DVD-R discs; I found the opposite to be true. Even these lists, which try hard, are not perfect. You've got to get a test disc to find out for certain.

Get somebody who can make a test disc (DVD-R and DVD+R) and/or find out if your player is compatible.

7. There is at least one DVD writer out
that can write either in DVD+R(RW) and DVD-R(RW) format. That might be the way to go, if a standard isn't adopted soon, which it doesn't look as if it's going to be.

8. Sony
The one that handles them all is Sony. I would stick with DVD + formats,
