His name is Fred Short. He's from North Little Rock and he is adamant that Kerry is a bona fide war hero. His descriptions of the action on those rivers is much more harrowing and hair-raising than anything we've heard from the MSM (surprise, surprise) and this guy credits Kerry with saving his life and those of others again and again.
Better still, he said that unlike some swiftboat captains (such as Kerry's commanding officer), Kerry wouldn't fire on human targets indiscriminately, but would investigate first. He said that this resulted in the sparing of innocent civilians as well as the capturing of important enemy leaders.
A vet I know was a swiftboat sailor and has been wracked with guilt for years because, following orders, he machine-gunned sampans before his skipper bothered to look inside them to find nothing but dead non-combatants.
It was this kind of behavior in a "Free Fire Zone" that Kerry properly identified as a war crime in his testimony to Congress.
