1. Here's a good information source.

http://www.followyourmoney.com lists how much money many businesses donated to the parties, both by actual amount and by percentage.

4. Yikes!
For pages and pages, Dem top contributors gave MORE to the Repugs. What's wrong with this picture?

6. A lot of large corporations play both sides.
I think the reason they give more to the Repubs is because that's who's in power right now. I did notice that there are some companies (State Farm Insurance, for example), that donated ONLY to Republicans. Might want to switch your car insurance. If you plan to travel, note that Delta Airlines gives more to Republicans, while United and Northwest give more to Democrats. Verizon is more Republican than Sprint, which is something to think about when deciding on cell phone service. Very useful stuff, IMO.

7. Don't go by dollar amount, go by percentages
Edited on Sat Nov-06-04 12:48 AM by bain_sidhe
I hate the way they limit you to ten on a page, so I compiled a list of ALL donors who gave more than 50% of their contributions to Republicans, and ALL donors who gave more than 50% of their contributions to Democrats. Sadly, the Republican list is a LOT longer. I apologize for the screwy formatting, I'll put it in table form on a web page eventually, but for now:

9. The unkindest cut of all - # 221 on the Repub list:
221. H.J. Heinz Company $163,668 67.73%

I know Teresa has nothing to do with the company, just the foundation, but I'm gonna make an exception anyway.

10. Also, if you have a choice between
buying from two different companies that offer the same type of product or service, go with the one that gives the highest percentage of their donations to Dems, not just highest dollar amount.

Similarly, if you just HAVE to buy something that only a Repub donor offers, pick the one that gives the *lowest* percentage to Repubs.

11. thanks for the post
I have been thinking about this for 2 days now. We need to re-think our usual way of doing business.
I would like to compile a list on my website eventually so that my friends and family have a reference for spending our hard earned money on companies that support our freedoms not exploit them

Tastycakes gives 100% to Repukes! I'm going to be baking my own cakes it looks like, which is perfectly okay with me, because I'm in full "simple life" mode.

2. I'm still working on a list
But you wouldn't believe the joy I've gotten at the shock of GOP businesses when I tell them I can't, in good canscience, support them any longer. I think big business has forgotten there are two parties out there. I'll support those who share my idealogy.

5. Perfect suggestion!!
I've talked about this myself many many threads and days ago. During the sinclair broadcsting fiasco, I actively boycotted businesses openly who advertised for that station. It was fun.

Several people in here also talked about boycotting certain republican businesses as they are able, in order to drive a point home. I'm all for it in my capacity.

Already, my teenage grandson is starting to "get the picture". He did some shopping for me today and bought "off brands"...Weeeeeeeee

I had to tell him that if he was serious, he'd also have to think about boycotting those nifty fancy EXPENSIVE athletic shoes he loves so much..(I think I saw him flinch lol)

I said, myself, that as much as is possible, I wouldn't hire lawyers or go to doctors or dentists or whatever like that, who are KNOWN RW republicans. I can't stop using gasoline in my vehilce or stop using my electriciy but I CAN do what I can...

Got a list of businesses and goods? SIGN ME UP!!

19. if you want to be truly progressive about it
buy a recent, pre-owned machine (computers are loaded with shit that terrible for the environment) and run linux on it

25. Apple isn't listed
and we've donnated about 85% to the democrats. And you can tell that but talking to any one of us.

But yes computers are filled with nasty stuff if left to a land fill, if properly treated a computer can be recycled with only about 5% loss of materials to a landfill, however this would be a hazardous waste landfill because the 5% is the internal battery.

Anyway everyone seems to be missing apple as a whole aside from a few reports. But thats the way its always been.

18. How about visiting Co-op America?
www.coopamerica.org

Among other things, they have a directory for businesses that are progressive/Dem-friendly.

20. BUYcott! Any way to get a national group like MoveOn to help with this?
animal rights groups provide shopping guides so why one for us? Starve the war machine, feed liberal/progressive action!

21. Anything new on this?
I'd much rather help progressives succeed, than put my effort into boycotting others.

Boycotts hurt more than the moneyed folks at the top of companies. They hurt everyone - including employees, suppliers, their employees, etc.

I want to support folks who give more than 50% to Dems/Progressives! And hopefully those who give an even greater share. Definitely those that treat and pay employees fairly!

22. on action
anytime you take an action, someone is affected. people are always affected by inaction too. there is nothing you can do or even not do that doesn't have an effect on someone. so act. follow the money and use your power as a consumer to begin to make a difference.
