QUES: Is there a thread listing the businesses we should support
and those we shouldn't based on their political contributions?

Alternatives to the biggies that dominate every small town?

For instance, where I live, how do I choose between the devil (Lowe's, affiliate of Wal-Mart, which I've boycotted for a couple of years now) and the deep blue sea (Home Depot, which gave $1million for Bush's last "Ashley" ad)? There's a small local hardware store that, in this Bible belt state, is likely to support *, but haven't asked them directly about their political sympathies.

It's harder for us in the red states (WV) to find such alternatives, although the Internet gives us more opportunities to support businesses than the local branches of the GOP-supporting giants. We have Wal-Mart and Target (is Target an okay business?), but no CostCo around here. Starbucks? Pier 1? etc etc

(My apologies if I missed the thread previously posted, but I can't do a search yet at the moment-soon to change come Monday)

1. you might ask fudge stripe cookays that question
as there were posts asking for names of businesses which promote liberal causes in each state so a sort of progressive 'yellow pages' could be made.

fudge stripe cookays might have info links for you about the businesses who support the theiving sock cuckers, er, the current political powers, to help you decide where to spend your $.

2. I have the same questions.
We live in a rural area of PA. We'd have to drive at least an hour to a Costco. I refuse to go to Sam's Club or Wal-Mart. So last week I started going to K-Mart again. I hope that's okay!

I didn't know that Lowe's is an affiliate of Wal-Mart. Damn!

Wal-Mart.

In this tiny town of some 50 to 60K population, we have not one, but TWO (2) Wal-Mart SuperCenters within 6 miles of one another, and another Wal-Mart in southern Ohio located within a few miles (fewer than 10) of the state line.

To add to the outrage, each and every Wal-Mart gets a fat city and/or county subsidy when it moves into a town, and not a small one at that (ranges into the millions, if memory serves me correctly).

4. Alternatives to big box stores that support Republicans
A small, local business is a better option than a large, Republican-supporting chain, even if that local business is run by Republicans. Why? They can do less damage than someone like HD or Wal-Mart. They just don't have as much money to throw around for political donations. Also, they're much more likely to respond to polite pressure from locals. Your shopping dollars are a lot bigger deal to a company that owns just one store.

5. Run The Retailers On Your Credit Card Statement Through...

this site...

http://www.followyourmoney.com/

Most major companies, they have the percentage of Dem/GOP donations.

Just some of the changes I've made: Switching grocery stores (to Safeway/Vons/Pavillions)

No more Pier One -- 100% GOP

Taking my husband's prescription from the red Sav On to Blue Costco.

Switched my daughter's b-day from an amusement part to local theater and indie restaurant.

This isn't about starving the economy to me; it's about shifting our dollars to companies that share our values.

Be sure and WRITE the stores you will no longer patronize and tell them why; I ask them to correct my stats if I'm wrong. And write to the Blue Companies to tell them why too.

I had breakfast at a cafe with a Kerry sticker on the window just for that reason -- and I told them that too! We are 55 million people under this Bush/Jesusland occupation; MONEY TALKS! PASS IT ON!

6. Thanks so much for your help!
Also, pretty much a grocery monopoly around here (Kroger) since Big Bear folded over a year ago. Guess I'll have to give up my Pier 1 addiction, but that was a luxury, anyway. I doubt I'll be able to shop as "purely" as I want to, but I'll do my best.

Shall check out the retailers on that site then. Thanks once again!

8. Pier One = Burmese Slave Labor?
Probably...I guess I just never thought of it that way until I say that figure, 100% donations to GOP!!

I know it's hard when you live where there's a grocery monopoly and I'm not an advocate of "pure" because just like extreme diets, people won't stay with it. But let's say we ALL move our family's prescriptions from SavOn or other GOP drug stores to Costco or small indie pharmacies. That kind of thing isn't really that hard and in numbers, it has a big impact.

If you have no alternatives to pharmacies etc....check out the online suppliers for prescriptions, pet food, etc...you will be shocked that for many products, having the stuff delivered to your door costs pretty much the same!

That way even if you still have to shop your monopoly store -- you spend less money there.

thunk?

Thanks for the advice. I do a lot of shopping online anyways, so buying other grocery items online won't be such a big shift. Yes, we'll have to vote with our pocketbooks, if nothing else!

20. WOW! Thanks very much, bettyellen! I was able to bookmark the other
threads you so kindly put together in response to jen6's "starve the beast" posting.

Thanks a bunch! At least we can do something even on a small scale, that when a critical mass of people all do, will surely have a negative effect on these GOP-supporting businesses!

Starve the beast, indeed!

23. Support SMALL Business
My husband and I are a small mom & pop, artists. We shop only small business. No Walmart, Kmart, no corporate grocery stores.

60% of the businesses in this country are made ofsmall, mom & pop businesses. When we go to the hardware store, we do the local guy, so he is here next year and keeping the revenue in our own state. We get gas at a small family owned gas station. We live in a rural situation, so errand day is jam packed with hitting all of the small family owned anything. Yes, it is more expensive, BUT we can not tell you how good it feels at the end of the day, to know that we helped someone keep their doors open, who are just like us. How do you know if that mom & pop supported Bush, I do not think that matters, at least your hard earned money isn't going into the big corporate money machine for all of the big rich folks to do with as they please. Keeping your money in your community is very important. Build relationships with the mom & pops, you never know when you might be really needing one another.

So shop your locals mom & pops, no matter what it is, trust me they will so thank you and so will we :o)
