Today, there is a new and real threat to voters, this time coming from touchscreen voting machines with no paper trails and the computerized purges of voter rolls.

Investigate the Vote (MoveOn.org) Questions are swirling around whether the election was conducted honestly or not. We need to know -- was it or wasn't it? If people were wrongly prevented from voting, or if legitimate votes were mis-counted or not counted at all, we need to know so the wrongdoers can be held accountable, and to help prevent this from happening again. That's why we believe that: "Congress must investigate the integrity of the voting process in the 2004 election." (email from moveon)

Should the 2004 election results be challenged now on the basis of black box voting fraud? Email the Kerry campaign, The Democratic National Committee and the The Government Accountability Office (GAO) all at once.

Investigate Electronic Voting Machines Urge your representative to join Representatives Conyers, Scott, Nadler, Watt, Wexler and Holt in calling on the Government Accountability Office to immediately undertake an investigation of the efficacy of electronic voting machines.
Now that November 2 has come and gone, some disturbing reports of problems with electronic voting machines have surfaced. For example:
In Columbus, Ohio, an electronic voting system reported that Bush received 4,258 votes while Kerry received 260 votes in a precinct where records show only 638 voters cast ballots;
In North Carolina, a machine lost more than 4,500 votes due to a mistaken assumption about the memory capacity of a computer;
In Youngstown, Ohio, and South Florida, numerous voters complained that when they tried to cast votes for Kerry, the machines instead recorded their votes for Bush.
All in all, more than 30,000 complaints have been gathered from across the country. In the midst of such turmoil, it's crucial that an independent authoritative investigation be undertaken to sort this all out.

Pass Meaningful Election Reform Urge your representative and senators to make meaningful election reform a top priority in the November special session and, if necessary, in the new session of Congress.
While the 2004 election experienced an increased turnout that should be celebrated, the 2004 election was also flawed by far too many obstacles to full participation.

Our national elections, rather than run via uniform nationwide rules, are run via a mishmash of local, city and state regulations and agencies, with the end result being that voters in one state are subject to different rules than voters in another state. While Congress previously passed the Help America Vote Act as a first step toward election reform, November 2 demonstrated that was clearly not enough. Congress should make passing meaningful election reform the first order of business during the upcoming November special session.

There are a few steps that should be taken immediately to reform our election systems, such as barring election officials from working on any partisan campaigns (a la Katherine Harris), establishing laws and strict penalties against voter suppression and intimidation; and ensuring accurate voting roll purges, free of racial or party bias.

Standardizing our election system across the entire nation will strengthen our democracy and will help to increase confidence in our elections. If we act now without the glare of an impending election, future elections can be free of the flaws of 2004.

Make Election Day a National Holiday In the aftermath of the 2000 election, the National Commission on Federal Election Reform, co-chaired by former presidents Carter and Ford, was created to develop election reform proposals to improve our democracy and ensure a more effective, fair election system.

One of the Commission's most important recommendations has been widely ignored -- making Election Day a national holiday.

Find elected officials, including the president, members of Congress, and more. We make it easy for you to find contact information for your federal elected officials simply by entering your zip code. You can also find committee information, key staff and more.

(DU post) So, what are we asking YOU to do?

1. Send this to EVERYONE in your address book
2. Write the media. (comprehensive list of media contact information)
3. Write your congressperson. (sample letters) www.senate.gov

Suggested Letter to Congress on Electronic Voting
It is urgent to pass Senate bill S1980 and House bill HR2239 to amend the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002. HAVA must be amended months prior to the 2004 election to encourage fair democratic elections in November 2004.

No secret programming instructions should be allowed on voting machines in a Democracy!

A paper ballot is needed in case of electronic failure, so votes can be counted even if a device fails.

Our electronic voting machines should be certified fair by making sure they do exactly what the manufacturers claim. If gambling machines are tested for fairness, why not voting machines?
We need random comparisons of electronic counts with the paper ballot counts that trigger automatic statewide paper ballot recounts when errors are found.

What WE CAN DO about Fraud/Irregularities: From John Conyers' office. 56 million Americans voted for John Kerry and possibly had their votes stolen. What to do? Well according to John Conyers office, here's what WE can do.

First: The House Committee on the Judiciary ~ Democratic Members are asking us to report any voter irregularities that we are aware of. I think personal stories are most sought, but send them what we have.

1. Report all voter irregularities to Mr. Conyers and The House Committee on the Judiciary-Democratc Members here:

http://www.house.gov/judiciary_democrats/contact.html

Next: We are being asked to contact our local representatives and encourage them to support John Conyers request to the General Accounting Office to investigate "voter irregularities" in the 2004 Presidential election.

2. Contact your local rep and ask them to sign on to this effort here:

http://www.house.gov/writerep /

And here:

http://congress.org /

3. Contact the GAO here: Ask them to investigate!

http://www.gao.gov/fraudnet/fraudnet.htm

Send allegations via e-mail to fraudnet@gao.gov

If you prefer to address this from a voter irregularity vs. Fraud perpective contact Jenkinswo@gao.gov

4. Contact the DNC as they are said to be investigating:
The number is 1-202-863-8000.

And hell while your at it contact Kerry's Senate office here: Please be kind and thank him for running for office, I am not providing this link so that people slam him ok? Just ask him to investigate the irregularities, or comment on it. Their office told me that the DNC is handling the issue.
