Activism Spotlight - send us your reports/photos
Edited on Sat Jun-03-06 01:32 PM by stephinrome
Hi all,

we've (U.S. Citizens for Peace & Justice, Rome) started a new section on our web site to give a little visibility to the numerous protests organized in the U.S. every week. And also to remind us that folks back home are speaking out. We plan to translate the blurbs to Italian soon and start publicizing this with Italian sites.

http://www.peaceandjustice.it/activism-spotlight.php

I've been combing the DU forums as well as other sites for material. But if you know of any protest or any type of action, please pm me with the details.

Thanks!

Steph

1. Activists Read this - Understand what you are up against
None of the media covers the most important aspect of the Malvo shootings. If you look at Newspapers on the dates when the shootings are underway you discover something quite interesting. The shootings begin the very day the debate on the war starts and completely and totally dominate the news until they catch them shortly after the declaration of war???

If you ask most people "do you remember the debate about starting the second Iraq war", they will all answer "yes of course". But if you followup with the question "name one point in the debate, a speech by a Senator or where their senator stood", nada.

Almost no one noticed any aspect of the most important senate debate in the last 50 years?

An interesting and odd fact... No one has done a story on what the real impact of the shootings were. It was to virtually eliminate the senate war debate from the media.

The special forces background of the senior member of the pair also seems to get short shrift.

Smells a little fishy to me. At a minimum its a very significant part of the story, i.e. that a common murderer had such an impact on our political process at such a critical time. Why is nobody covering this obvious fact?

2. In Lexington Ky Our local chapter of DFA (Democracy For America)
Change For Kentucky has taken on an aggressive face to face recruitment drive. It didn't take much to convince them that was what was needed to build membership and participation. If you have an idea, be ready to be the one that is in charge of carrying through.

Last night I took two clipboards (I'll explain later) with sign up sheets for volunteers for this fall's campaign. It was Gallery Hop, an affair that attracts a well educated crowd. I told them i was with Change For Kentucky and asked them if they wanted to be on our mailing list. While they signed I explained that we need people to help progressive candidates this fall and if they want to help, check the box next to the activity you find interesting.

The reason I carried two clipboards was that people traveled in groups and I could have two signing up at once. Or while a solo person is signing, I can attract another to sign.
