According to a poll released last year, gay and lesbian couples have around $500 billion of disposable income (no children).
What if someone created an organization (online or otherwise) that would wield the monitary wealth of many like minded gays and lesbians to work toward social change?
Our members (gay or straight) could contribute to the organization, and then vote on how that money is to be spent. In this manner, we could choose one course of action to work towards, and it could be an invaluable tool to keep business owners from donating money toward individuals who would be destructive to equal rights for gay and lesbian individuals (i.e. boycotts of companies that donate to individuals with very conservative ideas about gay and lesbian individuals/couples ).
My question for all of you out there in DU land (gay or straight) is, do you think that such an organization is even feasible given the nature of how people feel about most politics? Do you think that we could come up with enough members to donate enough money to actually DO anything? Are there enough gay, lesbian, or like minded individuals in the U.S. to even make this wayward thought a reality?
Is this even a good idea...or is it just my sleep deprived brain talking?
Further, does such an organization already exist? If so, where can they be reached?
I would appreciate any ideas that any of you may have.
