VotersUnite.org: Help Inform Your Election Officials!
Pray with Your Feet:
Participate in Project Myth Breaker

VotersUnite! to inform election officials.

Participate in the nation-wide distribution of "Myth Breakers" to all local election officials – the real scoop about HAVA misunderstandings, examples of election disasters, price comparisons of voting systems, hidden costs of DREs, election complexities added by the use of DREs, alternative HAVA-compliant voting systems, and more.

http://www.votersunite.org/takeaction.htm

Join with other activists throughout the nation to hand-deliver copies of this eye-opening information to your local election officials during the week of April 19 through 24.

VotersUnite!
Join in the kick-off event Tuesday, April 20, 1:00 pm EST.

Send out news releases to the local media.
Helpers, get free buttons!
Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to:
Nancy Woods
P.O. Box 6
Milton NC 27305

See the buttons here.

But most important -- distribute the Myth Breakers:

1) Sign up to help by emailing us at ellen@votersunite.org. Tell us if you want to manage the project in your state. Otherwise, tell us your state and the counties where you will hand-deliver the packets and say whether you will mail those that can't be hand-delivered.

2) Download the Myth Breakers (820Kb) and print it. Make copies if you're delivering to more than one election official.
http://www.votersunite.org/takeaction/mythbreakers.pdf

3) Hand deliver it to the election officials in the counties you signed up for.

4) Tell them, "I'm with VotersUnite.org, a non-partisan group of citizens concerned about electronic voting, and I'm delivering your copy of Myth Breakers.

VotersUnite! is new and has no funding. So, we need you and/or your group to bear the cost of making and distributing (possibly mailing) the copies within your state. However, we are preparing Excel files with the contact information for each of the county officials in each state, and we can provide the information to you in whatever format would be helpful: mailing labels, Excel, Word, etc.

Democracy is not something you believe in
or a place to hang your hat,
but it's something you do.
You participate.
If you stop doing it, democracy crumbles.

1. Thanks! I signed up for my little neck of the woods
...which is south-central New Mexico. I've been 'working' with BBV and New Mexico officials. Will do what I can.

3. Diebold voting systems.
ok. so the diebold systems are incredibly frightening. I really can't believe this hasn't become an issue for people. We've just spent the past week reporting ad-nauseum about Google's gmail "invasion of privacy", yet the hijacking of an election doesn't seem to appear on anyone's radar.

My county has adopted Diebold's voting systems. I've found them incredibly sensitive, and unwilling to discuss anything regarding the system. This scares me.

Does Diebold (and/or the privitization of the electoral process) scare anybody else?

cheers,
--ds

5. update...

Well, we're already making a difference. April 20 was the Project Myth
Breaker kick-off, and as you probably know, 41 small groups in 22 different
states participated. While we didn't get a lot of press, the West Virginia
group was mentioned in two news articles, one in the West Virginia Gazette
and the other in the Charleston Daily News.

- At the recommendation of the President of the Connecticut Registrars
Association, every one of the 169 town Registrars downloaded a copy of "Myth
Breakers."

- So far, 115 other counties are covered, many of them already delivered!

- Sherrie Swensen, Salt Lake County Clerk and a member of the Utah Election
Commission, received two copies on kick-off day. Later in the week a news
article in the Utah Desert News quotes her as saying regarding the hurry to
buy new equipment "I think it's a tragic mistake. Why are we rushing into
this?"

- IOWA is making its Myth Breaking into a state event! So pass the Project
information to all the people you know in Iowa. Tell them to contact Alta
Price at aprice@democracyforiowa.com
WILL YOUR STATE BE NEXT?

Read about some personal experiences of the kick-off here:
http://www.votersunite.org/takeaction/kickoff.htm

We are making great headway, but we still have MANY to go. Every election
official needs one! Please sign up for as many additional counties as you
can manage (http://www.votersunite.org/takeaction/myth-signup1.asp ) and
watch the STARS come out on your state's list of counties
(http://www.votersunite.org/takeaction/mythbreaker-counties.asp ).

Here are some ideas:

- Encourage your friends in other states and counties to participate in
Project Myth Breaker.
- Take a day trip to several neighboring counties and deliver Myth Breakers.
- Contact grassroots organizations in your state and get them involved in
the hand-deliveries.
- Post the following message in all your blogs and discussion groups.

HERE'S A TERRIFIC FIND! An interactive map. Click on your state, click on
your county, and see the election official's name and address in the
"Additional Information."

Keep breaking myths about e-voting!
